Hi,

I have a 5300 I use to take notes, do school work, etc. It is acting up. Occasionally, when it tries to power up the HD, it makes a "scratching noise" repeatedly. After a few times it is back to normal. It is significantly worse when it is hot. It will not pass a surface test. What would you recommend? New PB? New HD? Aftermarket fan?

not sure if the offer is still valid, but a 5300 will get you $700 off a new Powerbook from Apple.

No fan in the 5300's, so it sounds like your disk is dieing. You can get a new disk for arounds $200 ro $250, but I don't know if the 5300's worth it. Your call.

upgradestuff.com did have some NEW apple 1G drives for $49 each, you should check with them if the 750M drive doesn't work out.

Also, you can find Apple IDE drives for much less than $200 if you look around. MCE ( www.powerbook1.com ) might have some trade-ins that they'll warranty, you should write and ask if the ebay thing falls through.

OWC ( macsales.com ) is another good source for older, new drives.
