Preorders of the iPhone 5 exceeded 2 million in the first 24 hours, Apple has announced. The company says that the figure is double that achieved by the iPhone 4S, which went on sale in October last year. It adds that while the "majority" of preorders will be shipped to people on September 21st, "many" will only be delivered in October.

AT&T has also issued a statement, but will only say that it "set a sales record with iPhone 5 over the weekend, making it the fastest-selling iPhone the company has ever offered." Both Apple and its carrier partners are typically selective about when they release iPhone sales numbers, waiting mainly for major milestones or quarterly financial reports. Analysts have forecast that Apple will sell anywhere between 5 and 10 million iPhone 5s by the end of the hardware's launch weekend, which starts September 21st. Either figure would set another record for Apple, and the key issue may not be demand so much as supply. New online orders of the 5 are only slated to ship two to three weeks from now.

What a disappointment.

This is obviously the beginning of the end for Apple.

All the effort they put into making the new phone much the same as the old really backfired. Had they only listened to the interweb pundits and made a completely revolutionary new design…

Sad that it has come to this.

trolltrolltroller and the other sock puppets are unlikely to make an appearance here, since they have nothing to say about facts.
