Sony Announced a new camera coming in January today. The T1 comes in at 550 and is a 5 Megapixel point n' shoot jobbylooks pretty sweet too with it's massive LCD (2.5").

You should head over to http://www.dcresource.com/ and check out a few of the cameras on their front page for starters.

Price range? Does size matter? How about media?

Generally, these days, you can't do wrong sticking to Fujifilm or Canon.

I know lots of people who don't like the Sonys and the Nikons.

Samsung? I dunno.

The Canon A70 and A80 are excellent with the ability to manually control most functions. The S400 and SD10 are great for their size and still take excellent pictures but don't allow for much in the way of manual settings.

Yup, but after using a fully manual digicam for a few years (Kodak DC4800), I am looking forward to a high quality, light camera that I can just point & click. The fact that it comes in white doesn't hurt either.

Check out DP Review. They have all sorts of great, professional reviews on digital cameras. Then check dealcam for the best prices.

Agreed - S400 is fantastic. Great point and shoot but also with a surprisingly large amount of flexibility and manual control using exposure compensation, focus & exposure lock, different metering types etc. But the really important thing is the size - having something that just fits in your pocket without noticing it gives you so much more opportunity to catch great pictures at any time. And even thought the S50 etc aren't big, they are compared to the S400.

Only downsides - focussing in low light situations isn't wonderful, but still OK. LCD screen is pretty small.

I an going to "assume" that it isAFAIK a camera only has to support "PTP" communication to function with image capture.

My Digital Rebel will work with iPhoto and Image Caputre so long as I change the communication to the PTP setting... so I guess it's some industry standard.

Otherwise we'll have to wait and see.

Get a Fuji F700. It's a little pricey ($415 from newegg.com) but worth it. I just replaced my 3MP Canon PowerShot S20 and the difference is remarkable. Check out these pics I took for comparison.

old Canon:
apt01
apt02

new Fuji:
apt01
apt02

As you can see it's a night and day difference. I set both cameras to Landscape mode, the Fuji was set to 6MP and the Canon to 3MP. Both cameras were on a tripod. I scaled the pictures down in Photoshop and used the same quality jpeg settings for all pictures.

I'm going to try and borrow my sister's Nikon 3MP camera for comparison, if she'll let me.

If you want an inexpensive Digital SLR-style body, get the Fuji FinePix S5000. 10x optical zoom, SLR-style body and controls, 3.2 megapixels (6 interpolated), under $400 street price.

Definitely check out dpreview.com. It's where I've been going to check out the new Canon 10D.

My vote goes to the Minolta DiMage line. Being small and thin, the fit in any pocket, so you carry it around. My problem before my DiMage was that, even though I had a digital camera, I never took it anywhere because it was so bulky. Now this thing goes everywhere with me.

To the best of my knowledge, I know there's a DiMage imitation out there now. I think it's from Sony, but am not so sure. I don't know prices either, just wanted to give you options.

Im big into photography and ive recently bought a Canon S50 and it has been the best camera ive had in a long time. i highly recommend it to anyone interested in a great camera for the right price. i wont even use all the settings it has, however if i do venture into those fields that require them, they will be there.
