I remember reading that Apple will be shipping new PowerMacs with OS X only, and not OS9. Other models supposedly lose OS9 on Jan 1st.

is this true for the new PB's too.?

what's the alternative for older programs....some "classic mode"??

I suppose so. I think it only applies to machines that are introduced after January 1st. The PowerBooks and iBooks will continue to boot OS 9. It's not a time-delay thing. It's a ROM thing that Apple's going to code into its new Power Macs and iMacs.

I ordered mine on Friday and it said that it shipped with OSX and OS9, so I'm pretty sure it boots both.

Yes, the new Powerbooks should be able to boot into OS9 just fine. However, I'm under the impression that they no longer ship with OS9 installed at all, and you'd have to purchase OS9 separately (if you are one of the unlucky soles who uses OS9 but doesn't actually own a copy, must be rare).

Anybody confirm this?

My new Ti 867 boots into 9.22 just fine. There is no separate OS9 install CD. All software is provided on a single DVD! (Except for the Hardware Test CD)

DVD... cool. Fortunately, those of us who ordered the SuperDrive TiBook can backup our software install disc directly.

I wonder how many of those with the GHz TiBook who decided to forego the SuperDrive are kicking themselves now.

P.S. Some benches would be appreciated.
