QuickTime 6.1 delivers a number of quality and performance enhancements for audio, video, and full screen playback.

Enhancements include the following:

? MPEG-4 video provides more accurate rate control and improved visual quality.
? AAC includes new encoder controls and new bit rate options.
? DV includes significant encode and decode performance improvements.
? QuickTime Pro users will enjoy enhancements in full screen playback, including newly enabled keyboard shortcuts for movie control, faster entry and exit, and improved playback performance.

Nope, the coloured wigets are still on top of the metal, not embedded.

Come on GUI standardization!

Ah, but it does have the new brushed metal look but without the sunken widgets.

Aren't the widgets in iTunes and QuickTime hardcoded into the software? That's why the stop lights are still floating, I think.

Plus there is hardly any lag before it goes full screen.

I hate to break the mood but .mov playback is not at par with 6.02.
I now get stuttering and audio lag when I play my ..mov files.
Before the upgrade playback was smooth as silk. ;(

Using 3ivx D4 PR2 codec.

Anyone here have similar problems?

It's great that we finally have instant fullscreen on QT.
I've been waiting that feature for ages.

Decent fullscreening is great (and long awaited).

Still no playback of mp3 audio in avi's though (I guess we can give up on ever seeing this)...

Did the brushed metal change? Seems to look much better now; with very subtile brush pattern. Like we're going back to Platinum.

No, that's not true.

QuickTime never disabled export in third party apps. Only QuickTime Player and the QuickTime Plugin require Pro for export/saving.

The brushed metal has been improved and matches iTunes, Safari, etc. - but the widgets aren't sunken.

Do all Carbon brushed apps have floating widgets? All the older Carbon brushed apps seem to have floating widgets (iTunes, QT), and I don't know of any non-Apple Carbon brushed apps to try.
Is this rock and roll, or
a form of state control?

Is there an option to play movies full-screen if you don't have QuickTime Pro yet?

This is because carbon apps has to use it's own resources for brushed, and apparently Apple did not care enough to update the widgets to the new sunken ones. If they update Quicktime and Itunes to cocoa sometime in the future, they will use the brushed look in the Extras.rsrc and they will have sunken widgets.

There is no non-Apple brushed apps because the brushed look is only supported for cocoa apps.

I tried out QT 6.1 last night and its quite an improvement on my dual 450. Its definately snappier!

Seriously. After installing the new quicktime I went and checked out the Power of X presentation from the second day of MWSF. Not only was streaming better, but full-screen mode is perfect now. Just hit command-F and blammo, you're instantaneously in full-screen mode. No pause, no hiccups! The same thing is true for exiting full screen mode.

It also seemed to play better while minimizing and sitting in the dock. No dropped frames whatsoever!

Ahh, ok - I suspected as much, but I wasn't sure if there were Carbon brushed resources in the new Jaguar extras.rsrc. It's odd that they would bother to update the Brushed gradient, but not change the widgets...

That's not true. You can download Video Viewer to see the brushed metal appearance in a Carbon app. It's not supported (not yet working correctly), but you can option-click the speaker icon to get it.

QT 6.1 doesn't seem to be showing up in my 9.2.2 software update, but maybe there's a delay after the OS X release. Or maybe it has to be downloaded and installed outside of that. Does anyone know for sure?

As for QT 6.1 on 10.2.3, I too have observed some minor performance improvements.

Is there a direct link to the update? I'm on a modem and so don't fancy using SU, however the QuivkTime site doesn't list which version of QuickTime it has for download

You can do it with little fuss by typing this into the terminal (You will need your root password):

sudo softwareupdate QuickTimeSU-6.1

Which I found out about on apple.slashdot.org: http://apple.slashdot.org/apple/03/0....shtml?tid=164

Oh, there are no non-Apple Cocoa apps?

Btw. ffmpeg, Mplayer and other media apps have a textured look.
