"Addresses an issue in which the startup time in Mac OS X 10.3.6 through 10.3.8 may be extended if a large number of PostScript fonts are installed."

Finally!

It is a very good update, I would go with it. Safari 1.3 alone is worth it.

Here is Apple's list of improvement:

This update offers many reliability and compatibility improvements. These are just a few of the enhancements and improvements included:

Stickies

Addresses an issue in which Stickies could unexpectedly quit when creating a new note.

Addresses an issue in which new Stickies are invisible.

Stickies windows can now be minimized (an issue with Mac OS X 10.3.4 through 10.3.8).

Safari

Accessing certain websites, such as msnbc.com, mail.yahoo.com, ticketmaster.com, and others, no longer displays a "bad server response" alert that could occur in Safari.

Addresses an issue in which "safe downloads" files are not automatically opened after downloading.

SSL webpages (pages with URLs that start with "https://") load faster in Safari.

Adds some important Verisign root certificates to Safari, allowing you to connect to certain secure websites that you might not have been able to surf before.

Adds other trusted root certificates to Safari, such as VISA and RSA.

Finder

Addresses an issue in which copied files could become fragmented (but still usable) when you copy more than one file at the same time in the Finder.

Addresses a rare issue in which a file could become damaged when copying to a FAT16- or FAT32-formatted volume.

Improves reliability when mounting (making available) a disk image that's larger than 4.7 GB.

More

Addresses slow vertical tracking and intermittent trackpad behavior on PowerBook G4 12-inch 1.5GHz, 15-inch 1.67/1.5GHz, and 17-inch 1.67GHz computers.

Adds an "Apple Internal 56k Modem (v.32)" modem choice that you can use if you have difficulty using Verizon's Airfone Jet Connect service.

Addresses an issue with Mac OS X 10.3.6 and later in which the Calculator window won't appear if the Speak Button Pressed or Speak Total options are enabled.

Fixes an issue at the login window, where clicking the small space just below the bottom user account picture would produce this alert:
"Internal Error *** -[NSCF Array objectAtIndex:]: index(-1) beyond bounds (X)" (where X is the number of user accounts shown).

Addresses an issue in which the startup time in Mac OS X 10.3.6 through 10.3.8 may be extended if a large number of PostScript fonts are installed.

If your PowerBook G4 sometimes wakes up with a kernel panic, installing this update may help.

Addresses a data loss issue that could occur when syncing your iDisk at the same time that .Mac servers are experiencing heavy usage.
Avoids a potential Mail issue if the application is running when Daylight Savings Time changes.
Addresses some formatting issues that could occur when replying to HTML messages in Mail.

Nope, still have the fan problem here on my dual 2ghz G5.

Edit: AFter some use it does seem better. It was still noisy at first when I switched it back to Automatic in Energy Saver, but now is quiet.

Safari 1.3 seems snappy! I mean it!

Has anyone else noticed the highlighting in Safari seems different? Try selecting something from a webpage.

Also, the animating-gif-problem seems to have gone away. Discuss...

Safari is definitely a lot faster. Having said that, IMO I think Apple really needs to get rid of the blue progress bar and go to something more subtle. The fact that it's there essentially makes the user think the page is not done until the blue goes away. And this is true, but that's often a second or two after the page is rendered and usable. If it used something more subtle like Firefox or Camino I think the perceived speed would increase even more.

On another note, Safari Keywords no longer works. Hopefully an update will be forthcoming real soon.

Ok. Well now I'm a little miffed. Safari is hella faster as I've already said. However, for some strange and unknown reason Apple decided to change the behavior of CMD-Click on a folder in the Bookmarks bar. Previously, doing this would open all the sites listed in the top level of that folder in tabs. Items in sub-folders would not be opened. This was nice because you could put your main stuff that you wanted to see in the top-level folder to be opened with CMD-Click on a regular basis. But secondary stuff would be skipped by that yet still be easily accessible by the menus in the Bookmarks Bar. Unfortunately, a CMD-Click now will open up all sites in a folder on the Bookmarks Bar, including those that are in sub-folders. Now I'm going to have to change my bookmarks scheme to keep all the extra stuff from showing up with a CMD-Click.

Here's an example -- try dragging a picture from a webpage, the original picture will be highlighted. Also, Safari will actually print the highlighed selections as being highlighted.

Plus when selecting information in tables, the entire cell will be selected when dragging a selection on a page. It's hard to explain, but the result is more of the page ends up being highlighted when dragging a selection.

Have a go and see what you think.

For some reason, after just downloading .9, F1-F12 don't work for adjusting volume, etc. Is there a lock I hit by accident, or has someone else observed this?

Hard to describe exactly what the difference is, but the highlighting does seem different in Safari ... smoother or something .. can't quite put a finger on it. Happy to hear about the pop-under blocking, that was starting to get annoying.

Also happy that the update actually found the proper app to update (Safari is in a subfolder of /Applications. Previously, I had to move all the Apple apps out to the root of /Applications or they would not update properly.

Finally, Webscreamer. It doesn't look like this update "messed up" bookmarks but added some junk bookmarks to the toolbar. I have .mac, Apple, and Yahoo links already in subfolders of my toolbar bookmarks. This update seems to have made duplicates of them directly on my toolbar (and left my others where they were). Looks like it may just be some force-fed marketing on Apple's part. Oh well .. took all of three seconds to drag them out of the toolbar in a *poof*

Hmmm - am I going mad, or did the keyboard shortcut for view-source in Safari just change from command-option-v to command-option-u?

I find Safari faster - but I'd assumed that was because pithHelmet wasn't loaded.

[edit]
Hmmm2 - WebCore now seems to be case-sensitive in relation to CSS selectors. e.g. #fooBar will not match an element whose id="FooBar"

You are correct. My other Mac is still on 10.3.8 .. and the keyboard shortcut in Safari is 'V" rather than "U".

Holy crap Safari is waaaaaay faster, general OS seems a little better. The graphics drivers are better. My genie effect is much more smooth now when minimizing windows.

Yep Safari got a major update for me 2. It took until 10.3.9 but now I can do my online banking with Safari. Just transferred some funds without a hitch. Hopefully no problems with Tiger since I am upgrading the day it's released.

Just a note, I have Safari's debug menu visible and there is a note on the change from "V" to "U" for View Source.
Changed in Tiger to match "View Raw Source" in Mail
Sure enough, "Raw Source" in Mail is Command + Shift + U ... so the change was for consistency across apps.

Safari seems finally faster then firefox (even the g4 builds) when scrolling pages with a bunch of junk on them. Used to be one of the slowest and now I think it's the fastest. Might finally be a decent webbrowser for osx!
