I'm an absolute beginner to development. I don't know a thing about C code and what not. I've done HTML code, that's it.
How should I go about learning how to develop apps for the Mac using XCode?
Any recommendations?

You will need time. Register to Apple developers (should be connect.apple.com) which is free. Take a look at all the material posted there. There is an introcution to Objective-C, but If you've never progremmed before, I would buy a programming for fummies book first, as designing and doing HTML is *very* different from coding High level languages. Once you've read all this start playing with xcode.

The Objective-C intro is at developer.apple.com, which doesn't require registration.

It does, however, assume that you know C.

Well, let me use this thread without starting a new one...
If I know a bit of C (still have a hard time with pointers... didn't know how I pass all the Computer Science subjects in my university days ), did a fair bit of UNIX shell programming (but no Mac or other OS specific programming experience), any recommendation how I can pick up stuff for OS X development?
Also, do I need to have a Intel Mac to generate a universal apps?

I'd say get the Hillegass book. It's basically targeted right at your skill level, maybe a hair lower.

No, thank goodness. Otherwise Adium would still be PPC only

What's the title of the Hillegass' book?

Have you considered using a RAD tool like Runtime Revolution? If you are looking to create fast solutions then its quite easy. Of course if your objective is Objective-C then you'll want to go the xCode route.
