Wait of iOS 4.1, out next week.

It includes native printing support.
Details forthcoming, it's just been announced by Steve at the Sept 1 event.

Right now, very difficult to print from either device. Looking at some of the recaps, however, it doesn't appear that wireless printing will appear until iOS 4.2, which won't be released until November. iOS 4.1 has things like HDR Photos, HD Video uploads, TV show rentals and "Game Center."

Other than managing the same music, apps, video, photos and other docs thru the same computer, there's no real syncing between the iPad and the iPhone without some external tools. MobileMe helps keep address book, bookmarks, etc in sync. Using IMAP for email also helps. To manage media or other files requires iTunes or something like DropBox.

There are several apps in the App Store that give you printing functionality in some form. Some require running a server on your desktop while others allow wireless printing to a printer connected to your desktop. Search for "print", "printer" or "printing" in the App Store to find these apps and read reviews.

As -Q- said, iOS 4.2 will have native wireless printing support when it comes out in November.

I've been using Print Magic HD on my iPad for a while. It prints just fine to both a Brother Laser and HP Inkjet that are on my network. It involves one extra step vs, printing from a computer (copying the document or web URL into the Print Magic app) but once you get used to that, it works great.

As Q said, IMAP, MobileMe, DropBox, and iTunes cover you pretty well for syncing.

You may be able to get around paying for the MobileMe with Google services, but it won't be as seamless.
