Does anyone know the release date for OS X 10.5?
Read October a few months back, but now that we are weeks away...has a date emerged?

I'm not holding my breath. I'll ramp up my 'eagerly anticipating' level once they announce a ship date.

Apple should release Leopard on Halloween, that would be so awesome.

Given the fact that I'm looking forward to Leopard, I'm thinking that an "October Release" would therefore probably mean the last possible date.

Well, if they update the Mac Pro line at the same time (long overdue) it'd bring some truth to the old programmers joke that Halloween is the same as Christmas because OCT 31 == DEC 25.

I feel like Apple is waiting for the HD-DVD/BluRay war to end before introducing a new Pro machine. Since that won't happen in the near future, Apple must guess noq and support one of these in there next Pro machine. Most likely, they will support Blu-Ray. But why not put in software support for both and allow customers to choose between the two as a BTO option.

It took YEARS for the DVD rewritable conflict to be resolved-by having two incompatible standards. I do NOT expect any real resolution between HD-DVD and BluRay for many years (maybe as long as it took for VHS to emerge as the defacto video cassette standard). There are already a number of dual-format high density/definition drives on the market, and their prices are coming down as the manufacturers get the kinks worked out. But I doubt that Apple is worried about that at all-SuperDrives certainly don't support all DVD formats right now, do they?

I'd rather Apple not add support for BluRay or HD-DVD at all, given the draconian DRM stuff they'd have to build deep into the internals of OS X just to get the license to play back any of the movies (link).

If my choice is sticking with standard-definition DVD, or having a computer that isn't my computer anymore, I'd rather just go with standard-definition DVD.

I know that the Super drives support DVD+R. Or are you talking about something else?

Consumers are starting to purchase HD Video Cameras. iMovie and other such programs have long supported HD video. But what good is it if we can't burn it on our Macs? I haven't looked deep into the situation, but if i was to purchase an external blu-ray or HD burner, will my mac support it? I was under the impressiont that OS X doesn't support the 3rd party burners yet. That's why i figured apple would release an internal one and provide the necessary support.

If you take a look at Blu-ray.com - Blu-ray Recorders, you will see many blu-ray burners. However, when i go to the manufacturer websites, i can't seem to find anything about apple sofware, or the computer specs needed to run these burners. Specifically, if i hook it up to my Mac, will it work?

DVD-R is a valid format, but it's not supported by SuperDrives. It's not like the hardware to handle both kinds of media (and a whole lot more) isn't available all in one package-I have Lite-On and Sony "every kind of media" drives...+, -, dual layer, etc.

Huh? The SuperDrive in my relatively old iMac G5 2.0 GHz (non-iSight) reads and writes DVD-Rs just fine.

My PowerBook G4 12" 1.33 superdrive writes and reads DVD-R and I see the new MacBook Pros do as well:

From current MacBook Pro tech specs:

8x slot-loading SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
* Maximum write: 8x DVD-R, DVD+R; 4x DVD-R DL (double layer), DVD+R DL (double layer), DVD-RW, DVD+RW; 24x CD-R; 10x CD-RW
* Maximum read: 8x DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-ROM; 6x DVD-ROM (double layer DVD-9), DVD-R DL (double layer), DVD+R DL (double layer), DVD-RW, DVD+RW; 24x CD

Whatever the reason is, you are most certainly wrong.

The superdrive I have supports -R, -RW, +R, +RW, +R DL DVDs

Superdrive is just a very general term for an optical drive that can both read and write DVDs and CDs.

In fact, I think they originally supported DVD-R first and eventually added DVD+R later on.

Of course, they added the dual-layer version of DVD+R before they added dual-layer DVD-R, simply because DVD+R came out with dual-layer first. My iMac burns dual-layer DVD+R but only single-layer DVD-R for this reason. Dual layer DVD-R got supported later on, IIRC.

My mistake! I misread the specs apparently. My SuperDrive does support DVD- media, as well as both types of dual layer. Oops. I was right that at one time they didn't support everything though, wasn't I?

Well, when they used drive models that were designed at a time when DVD-R existed and DVD+R didn't, the drives supported DVD-R and not DVD+R. And then later when they used drives that were designed at a time when DVD+R had dual-layer support and DVD-R didn't yet, the drives only supported dual-layer on DVD+R media. So yeah, it seems Apple's manufacturers weren't consulting the Psychic Friends network before designing their drives.

Yes, but it always supported DVD-R as it was the first standard. In fact, to my knowledge DVD+R is still not a standard.

Sorry to get back on topic....

No insider info. about when Leopard is slated for release? You think we'd have heard about the software being prepped for shipment.

I think once any of us knows, we'll all know, because the date'll be posted on Apple's web site.

I want the GM build sooner. As for HD DVD/Blu-ray drive inside a Mac would be cool, but I don't need one right now on my Mac.

Eh, I don't know that they're running out of time. I expect to see a RC build fairly soon, but they can probably go GM a week before release and be fine.

Nobody is dodging the HD issue... nobody knows.

Most people are guessing that they will support both formats.

Steve Job's has already said in a interview a few months ago that it will ship late October. So my guess is it will be out sometime between October 26-31th.

Yah, even if it's the last day, I'm fine with that. As long as it delivers on the goods.

I would like to see HD support in DVD Player, but who knows.

Hasn't it shipped on a Friday the last couple of releases?

So my bet will be "last Friday in October" :-)

how can they be fine if they release the gm build only a week before ? do you think every deveoper will beable to get his apps tested and compatible with leopard in one week ? what about the massive programs like the adobe suite or office.

they need at least a one month advance release in order for 3rd party devs to work out the show stopper bugs. the minor kinks will have to go into the release builds since they're already delayed i dont see them putting it off further.

They've been releasing builds for developers for well over a year now. Going GM means they're ready to ship to stores.

It would be nice to have 10.5 out but it would be nice to have a bug-free (or as glitch-free as possible) 10.5. If it means waiting a little longer for greater QC, I'm all for it.
