A life-size "slice" of the planned exterior of Apple's under-construction Campus 2 has popped up in Gundelfingen, Germany, reports German enthusiast site iFun.de. Pictured posted on the site show two stories of the expected four- or five-story (above ground) structure, which will be built as a massive ring-like office building with a large natural area in the center. The segment was likely created to test the materials chosen for the building's exterior.

The exterior sample structure was spotted at Josef Gartner GmbH, a company that specializes in custom-made aluminum and steel building envelopes and facades. The company has been in the building business since 1868 and has offices in the UK and the US among other countries. A similar mock-up of a section of the building has also been seen in Cupertino.

The campus, which is expected to open sometime in 2016, will incorporate a number of state-of-the-art technologies for energy efficiency as well as featuring unusually long curved glass panels and other natural materials. A company specializing in 3D imagery has created a rich "flyover" of what the finished project will look like from the air, while ground crews are still in the earth-leveling stages of construction, with some retaining walls and an 40-foot trench completed thus far.

We do in fact have staffers of UK, Canadian and Australian heritage, so the occasional "British Spelling" or phrase does creep in sometimes. This one was my fault, I'll fix it (though really Americans should just get on board; "storey" denotes a floor of a house better than "story").

I dunno, once you get into the actual floor numbering of differing countries, it can become confusing -- a lot of European countries, especially Spain, consider what we Americans call the first floor they call the "primary" or "ground" floor, and what we call the "second" floor they call the "first" floor.

Programmers familiar with 0-indexed arrays and 1-indexed arrays will understand the translation pain...
