The Mac OS 10.5.1 UI on MacBook Pro 2.2GHz freezes completely if the processor is on heavy load (e.g. coding a dvd-menu with idvd)! The base system does not freeze, only the UI, sometimes including the cursor! The MBP can be pinged from another host and an ssh connection to the MBP is also possible, so it's only the UI that freezes completely.
To reproduce the error use a cpu-intensive application such as idvd to code a dvd-menu! After 20 - 40 minutes the whole UI is frozen! The same thing also occurs in other cpu-intensive applications such as the game SecondLife.

console log (my machine name is bunny but I'll change it soon to b*tch if the error isn't fixed soon ;-)):

I think:
- There is a bug in the GeForce 8600M GT kernel driver of Mac OS X 10.5.1
- OR it is a hardware failure, maybe because of the heat!
- Maybe it's related to applications using OpenGL (see console log)

The only solution then is to POWER OFF the MBP or to kill the WindowServer process (HUP) over a SSH connection!

Is someone other experiencing such a problem with a MacBook Pro (or even another Mac with such a graphic card)? Please post if yes or if you have an interesting information!! I think the most users don't even notice such a problem, because they don't need the power over a longer time period (20-40 minutes).

It's a very critical bug, now I have a very powerful machine, but can't use it's power.

I've forgotten to include some links, I'm not the only one with this problem!!!
Apple - Support - Discussions - MacBook Pro 2.2GHz SR freezing ...
Apple - Support - Discussions - Display freezing - NVChannel(GL): ...

or searching the web with "graphics channel exception" also brings many results!

I've submitted a bug report on Apple ADC. The bug ID there is 5727589. I've also submitted a feedback directly over the Apple site.

Got the same thing too on mine. I don't think it's specific to the MacBook Pro 2.2 though. I've seen an iMac 20" at the Apple store with the same problem (UI frozen, mouse still moving). I don't think it's related to CPU load. It happened to me when the CPU was not loaded. Leopard is just a big ****. I hope 10.5.2 will fix all the bugs/crash/freeze. Safari is crashing several times per day, Finder cannot even change owner/permission on a file without crashing... airport connection is randomly lost as well. very disappointing.

I can only speak for me, I own only a MacBook Pro 2.2GHz. It's possible that other machines are also affected! It could be that every newer Intel Mac with a nVidia GeForce 8600M GT or even another nVidia graphics card is affected. Please post if your machine is also affected!! It's only important, that the error message "NVChannel(GL): Graphics channel exception!" can be found in the Console after such a freeze!! Otherwise I think it's another bug!
It could also be that ATI graphic cards are also affected! So please make a post if that's the case.
I've heard, that the problem also exists on Mac OS 10.4.11, so it's not only Leopard related!

We need to make this more public, otherwise it will never be fixed! I've heard from an Apple developer, that it won't be fixed even in Mac OS X 10.5.2!!!!!! At least not in the current build!!

So we need to browbeat Apple a little bit more if we want a fix!!! Thank you for your support!

I wonder if it requires a video card-intensive app to bring it down as well. Some of my CPU-intensive apps (number calculations, scripts, logs parsing) stress my MBP 2.2 overnight (with iTunes in the background) and it recovers fine. None of them involve much of the graphics card, though.

That's possible, yes! I had this problem with the following applications:
- iDVD '08
- SecondLife

In iDVD '08 I've taken the first theme and a DivX-file (1 hour, 1,2GB). I dropped the DivX-file as movie and made a chapter-selection for every minute. Then I've droped the same DivX-file on the drop zone in the first menu and put a background picture there. Afterwards I've changed the song in the first menu and set the menu duration to 4.30 minutes. In the second menu I've only also droped the same DivX-file on the drop zone, changed the song and set the menu duration to 30 seconds.
So if I've started the preview mode and clicked a little bit around, the whole UI froze. The same thing happened if I've tried to burn a DVD and the encoding process was started (total encoding duration = 2 hours, freeze after 20-40 minutes)

In SecondLife the game also freezes after +/- 30 minutes. Only some graphic-intense places need to be visited, if at all.

I've heard that this problem also happened in addition particularly in the following games:
- World of Warcraft
- X-Plane
- Doom 3

As mentioned before, all those problems can be found by searching the web with "graphics channel exception"!

So, all those applications use OpenGL, therefore it's to assume that the problem is related to OpenGL!

Someone at Apple knows about the problem"! But unfornately it's not possible to contact him, because I've found it in the Apple Mailing List and his e-mail address is hidden!

My 2.4Ghz MBP has never crashed and I've used both cpu intensive and graphic intensive apps.

What graphic intensive apps do you use? What graphics card do you have? Also a nVidia GeForce 8600M GT? And is the ROM-Version also 3175 (can be found in the System-Profiler section graphics)?
When did you buy the MBP?

Sorry for the many questions, but we need to sort out what's related to this problem and what not! Thank you for your help!

I use aperture which is very heavy duty on the GPU. Photoshop which is more cpu bound and of course vmware fusion. I know that's cpu intensive, but not sure about gpu. I also work on xcode which can stress the cpu from time to time.

I don't know the rom version as I'm not at home. The GPU is NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT with 256MB of GDDR3 SDRAM. My MBP is the mid 2007 model, and I purchased it shortly after apple introduced the model.

Okay, but those applications don't use OpenGL! Try the game SecondLife or to make a bigger project in iDVD! I've described above what kind of project I've made in iDVD, it must be a "bigger" one.

But it could also be that we have to do with a hardware error, and so not all machines are affected!! My MacBook Pro is from end-October.

Do you own a FireWire external Hard drive? If so, load a clean install of Leopard or Tiger on it and see if the problem persists. That'll let you know if its a directory related or hardware related.

If its hardware related, you may need to go down the AppleCare road. It could be as simple as a reloading of your OS or as serious as a Logic board swap.

Yes, I've made a clean install of Leopard without any extensions, but the problem persists! It's either a software bug in the Apple nVidia kernel driver or a hardware error.

For what it's worth.

I play Second Life. The new 10.5.2 with Graphics Update has fixed all my crashing problems with Second Life!!! HOORAY

I was able to play Second Life for like 8 hours in a row last night with NO crashes.

Yay!!

Well, I've figure it out! The problem is NOT 10.5.2, but rather the Leopard Graphics Update that followed shortly on its heels. I just spent the day backing my computer up, formatting, and reinstalling everything. Except this time, I didn't install the Leopard Graphics Update.

In short, everything is working perfectly. Before reinstalling, with a certain sequence of events, I could reproduce the Graphics Freeze 100% of the time. In addition, overall graphics performance with things like Stacks was significantly choppier than before installing the LGU. Now, after reinstalling and not installing the LGU, after multiple attempts, I CANNOT reproduce the Freeze. Plus, my graphics performance is significantly faster and smoother than with the LGU installed.

A post on the Apple Discussion Boards said that machines that ran flawlessly before the LGU seem to be hosed by it, whereas machines that crashed before the LGU seem to be fixed by it. That would seem to be an accurate assessment, as my machine was fine without the LGU... and is ruined with it installed.

So now, I'm happily running 10.5.2 with no problems...
