So, what're everyone's favorite games? We're all interested in knowing... and there hasn't been a poll on this forum for a while!
Let's divide it into two categories: PC (meaning Personal Computer, so Mac or Windows) and Console. Be sure to consider your *entire* gaming career, not just recent months... what were those games you were just antsy to get back to your computer/TV and play whenever you had other obligations? Or perhaps games that were released over 5 years ago that you still play regularly?

Anyway, my lists:

PC:
1. Diablo II
2. Master of Orion II
3. Age of Empires II
4. SimCity 2000
5. Counter-Strike

Console:
1. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (SNES)
2. Super Smash Bros. Melee (GC)
3. Chrono Cross (PSX)
4. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (SNES)
5. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES)

DAMN that was hard... there are just so many awesome console games! Can't say the same for PC, though that list was hard as well.

Ok, your turn
Be happy.

Console:

4) Mario Tennis
5) 007 Golden Eye (Just got the new Game Cube 007 and it might take the #1 spot soon)

SUBJECT TO CHANGE

Since this was WAY too hard to narrow down to just five, I rated my top ten console games/time-wasters (which is biased due to college years ):

I would say right now, my favourite on the Mac are:

1. Return to Castle Wolfenstein
2. Unreal Tournament
3. Giants: Citizen Kabuto
4. Deus Ex
5. I don't have a fifth, but I'm hoping it will be Red Faction... I just bought it to hold me off until I get playing the final version of Castle Wolfenstein.

Just noticed that most gamers' favorites are more modern titles and that an "*entire* gaming career" is quite short. Please, can anyone tell me that they remember Adventureland and Pirate's Cove by Scott Adams? I don't want to feel so old.

Top 5 PC (Mac)

1. Deus Ex (I can't believe more people aren't mentioning it ... :-)
2. UT - Tactical ops (hanging out for the commercial release)
3. UT
4. Marathon, M2 & Infinity. (*heh heh* they're all the same)
5. Pathways Into Darkness (The First FPS I ever played on the mac, and as you can see, I'm a fan of FPS ;-)

As for Consoles ...

1. Legend of Zelda: Ocrina of Time (N64)
2. Final Fantasy VII (PS)
3. Resident Evil 2 (PS)
4. Grand Theft Auto III (PS2 - a work of art)
5. Crazy Taxi (PS2)

I'm really looking forward to replacing UT with RTCW ... the multiplayer aspect sounds fun.

BTW: Leonard, I've completed Red Faction on the PS2 ... it's fun, but after awhile it gets a little ... boring. It sound ironic, but there's too little 'interaction' with the environment (sure, you can blow holes in stuff, but you can't crawl through a ventalation shaft that _looks_ like it should be crawled into ... ;-)

Cheers,

Tobes.

Hmmm, this one is really hard. I've played so many good games across so many systems (Amiga, Apple IIe/GS, Atari, C64/128, Mac, x86 and nearly all the consoles) that I can never pick so few as my favorite because I never remember them all very easily. Here are ones I liked a lot off the top of my head, they probably aren't my all time favorties.

PC:
1. The Gabriel Knight Series (yeah it's cheating since there's 3)
2. System Shock Series (once again cheating -- 2 of 'em)
3. Ultima Series except IX (bigtime cheating -- including the Ultima Underworld games and the Worlds of Ultima games that's 14 titles)
4. The Longest Journey
5. Obsidian
(6.)Deus Ex (had to cheat and add it when I remembered it, I've played through 3 times so far )
(7.)Fallout series except Fallout Tactics
(8.) Any adventure game that was made my LucasArts (The Dig, Loom, Monkey Island series, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Sam and Max, Grim Fandango, Maniac Mansion, Zak McKracken, etc...)

Older PC's:
1. Legacy of the Ancients
2. Wasteland
3. Mars Saga/Mines of Titan
4. M.U.L.E.
5. Archon series
(6.)Castle Wolfenstien and Return to Castle Wolfenstien (the original 2D versions)

Console:
1. Shining Force 1-3
2. Phantasy Star 4
3. Adventure
4. Sonic Series
5. Super Mario Series

(Actually this thread just reminded me of something, I'll post a new thread about it)

This thread has the same problem as when surveys ask for the best x of all time: mostly recent x is selected. There is no doubt that recent x is better than older x. However, if I am to judge which x I enjoyed the most then it is not x that we are comparing but pleasure levels! With this in mind here are my top favorite games:

1. Pirates! (MicropProse for Apple IIc+)

From 6th grade until 8th grade I played this game almot everyday, with occasional month breaks. This game caused me to learn geography and history of the Caribbean, European military history 15th-18th century, and just inspired me in other areas. I don't think I have spent more hours on any other game. I even took the manual to school to read for fun.

2. Romance of the Three Kingdoms Series(Koei for SNES, PS1)

This is a historical strategic simulation of an interesting period in Chinese history. Still play today, part VII coming out this month. Countless hours of fun, fights, arguments, and even some held back tears over this game with my brothers. I've learned a lot about China!

3. Civilization II - I love history and especially enjoy playing as the Carthaginians. Still playing this game (haven't bought III yet). Sometimes I go home for lunch at work just to play a few turns!

4. Silent Service II (Microprose)
This game caused me to want to join the Navy and become a submariner (I didn't, went to law school instead). I like this game so much as a kid I used to keep a Captain Log of my tours sinking Japanese shipping from a first person perspective. Fun to read afterwards.

5. Space Quest Series (Sierra)

Now discontinued but there is a chance it may be revived. This was an old styled puzzle-adventure game. I remember waking up early one morning to go to school (1988?) and finding my father up trying to get past me in this game. Although hours played is significantly less than the other games on this list I have a lot of fond memories about it. Trying to figure out how to advance past roadblocks in the story kept me daydreaming at school.

All of these game I played so much that I understood how the computer reacted to things, its programming, the possible cheats, and other interesting things in these worlds. For example, in SSII there was an area near in island in Indonesia were there was a submerged "wall" (steep rise of the seafloor). You could sink if you hit it submerged at high speed.

This post is getting too long, I better stop.

Late Update: For some strange reason I omitted three games from this list: Master of Orion II, Netrek, and Empire (not AoE). My list should really be:

Oh forget it, this is too difficult!

After looking through people's lists, I can shamelessly restate my old opinion that Mac gamers are over-obsessed with first-person shooters... so many lists just reorder RTCW, Deus Ex, UT, and Q3 interspersed with whatever.

But that's okay; I just personally find shooters rather underwhelming these days.

Thus why all those months ago when I first posted to this thread I could not name just 5 great ones. Also of course newer games are going to be on the brain more, that's what we play now. Not to mention all of the people posting who were not ALIVE when Pirates came out.

Yeah, designed my first game after spending WAY too much time with Pirates (still no game like it I have found to date) such a fun game.
