Subtle animations like Cellery's are fine, and make for a really cool sig. However, some people go way overboard.
Oh and commenting on your sig....there is a twin-turbo'ed WRX with a sticker on the rear windshield that says "Vtec Sucks!"
It runs an 11sec 1/4 mile too

I tried a version of my sig using png. I was trying to get just the letters, with a slight transparant shadow. It was over the limit and didn't even look as good a the GIF version I have today.
I am still waiting for a guess on the mountain viewed in my sig, and better yet the location it was taken from..

like demon said, there have been no changes to official policy regarding sigs.
let's take this opportunity to remind people who have animated sigs to self-censor. thanks

Text: No more than 4 lines of text. Or no more than one image and 2 lines of text. Yes, it's difficult to tell "lines" with browser window sizes and all, but no huge paragraphs of text in your sigs please.
Aargh. Just seen one thats like 9 lines of text and an image. Here's a novel idea... why don't we have no images in sigs for a short while, see how many members freak out?

Don't have a sig, but a suggestion. Can the UBB automatically size sigs? In other words, have it insert "WIDTH = 140 HEIGHT = 40" into the IMG tag.
Sounds like a perfect solution, that way, people can't change it no matter how hard they try.

It can be a good solution but will create lot of problems. What if the signature is smaller than 140x40? It'll stretch and look awful. If they can make it smarter by look if the signature is smaller than 140x40 then leave it alone, it'd be better solution.

If it looks nasty, then all the more reason to make it fit within the space..
People freaked last year when image sigs were disallowed. Seems like every month or so, the weeds need to be trimmed.
I say if MacNN is free to annoy us with popunders (that nobody clicks.. PowWeb? WTF?!), we should be free to annoy them and each other with mega-sigs and flashing, 50K, neon crap.

animation is not allowed anyway, so just export your made-in-flash static image as a format that more people's browsers will be able to read.

You should put NSFG in your sig.

He is ... kinda. *Cough*. The store has plenty of NSFG goodness. I wouldn't want to bother shrinking him down to 140 x 40 (whatever) pixels. I'm not sure I could ... well ... fit him into those dimensions.

rampant, please change yours.
no real need to bump this anymore, since the guidelines are now listed in your profile. that's right, directly to the left of the space where you type in your code, it says:
Signatures images should be: 140 pixels or less in length, 40 pixels or less in height, less than 10KB, and not animated. Signatures should be no more than 4 linies of text, 2 lines if you also have an image. You may use UBB Code in your signature, but not HTML. UBBCode Images are permitted.
that should reduce confusion. a lot.

didn't think bumping this was necessary since the sig guidelines are now listed in the Edit Profile screen, but i see that it still is:
Signatures images should be: 140 pixels or less in length, 40 pixels or less in height, less than 10KB, and not animated. Signatures should be no more than 4 lines of text, 2 lines if you also have an image. You may use UBB Code in your signature, but not HTML. UBBCode Images are permitted.
i'm going to ask the other mods/admins if they want to change the pixel restrictions a bit. but until i come back with a decision on that, please respect the current ones.

yes, i'm cracking down on all the violations once again. there has been some discussion of disabling signature images altogether, but i'd hate to have to do that. so i'm sending lots and lots of people friendly reminders that they need to change their signature.
a lot of people will say i'm nitpicking a few pixels here and there, but we only have three choices: strict guidelines, loose guidelines (and we all know how well that'd work in the lounge) or no signature images at all.

Alright, time for a little revolution here.
In today's world of increasingly large displays and insane resolutions, these sig guidelines are just outdated. Take for instance, my signature. Does this look too big to ANYONE? ANYONE? No. It doesn't. Neither does 90% of the signatures here. So I present a 4th option: Change the sig guidelines a TAD. I think a LITTLE bit larger sigs would be fine, not everyone will use the extra space anyway.
Agree?
Good. Slightly larger sigs should now be fine.

you don't really think i'd send out all this stuff if my signature didn't already comply, do you?
my .mac account reports it as 5KB. some browsers (IE for sure) don't save images correctly. so they'll appear to be quite huge (say, 32k instead of 5k) when they aren't. try saving it from netscape/mozilla/omniweb and see if you get different results.
as for changing the guidelines, we're sticking with 140x40 for now. if we change it in the future, we'll let you know. if people can't comply with the current guidelines (always wanting to go a bit bigger), what's to stop them from doing it again once it has been increased. so let's first make sure that everyone can abide by the current guidelines.

Oh just ban signatures ya power-hungry nut-case. Quit whining.
Also, how do you define 4 lines of text? Heck, on a 48" plasma display 4 lines of text is very, very long.
As far as I'm concerned making the sig guidelines a little looser wouldn't hurt. Ok, it might hurt your ego... but thats not my problem.
On a totally unrelated note, I think demonhood should be replaced with a blind hippie All in favor say "aye".

Yaah what good is having a sig size limit when people have 4 or 5 lines of text below it.
