The next gen Xeon CPUs (5700 series, probably) will support 4 channels of RAM per socket, for a total of 16 slots for a dual socket machine.
So we should see a new case with the next upgrade (going with a higher RAM ceiling).

No, I'd expect Apple to maintain the current limited number of memory slots.

Not so sure. Apple is usually quite good about RAM ceilings in the MP - the first gen had lots of slots. I have some hope that they will rectify this in the redesign for Sandy Bridge-EP.

The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

If memory serves, Intel did the primary motherboard design on all the first-gen x86 Macs. So the models would get out faster. That could explain more generous expansion in the first round.

IIRC, that was only for the laptops and the iMac, but I may be wrong.

So 32 Gb is the limit? That's not future proof. Except if you can install the expensive 8 Gb modules.

4GB modules were over $900 when they were new.
