HONG KONG (MarketWatch) -- Microsoft Corp. has been ordered by a Chinese court to halt sales of some versions of its Windows operating system, according to a media report Wednesday. The computer giant received the order after a Beijing court ruled Monday that it was in violation of a copyright agreement over the use of Chinese character fonts designed by a Chinese technology company, according to a Reuters report. The order affects versions of Windows 98, 2000, 2003 and Windows XP that use the font. The report said it was not clear when the ruling would take effect or how many copies of Windows would be affected.

Doesn’t say which typefaces, either. Perhaps it’s one that’s been replaced in Windows 7 (I say, knowing absolutely nothing about typefaces included in Windows 7).

China of all countries is suddenly concerned about copyright infringement?
Sell or send me your vintage Mac things if you don't want them.

Windows 98? It took Chinese courts this long to realize this?

It takes 12 years to get all the right people to sign and chop all the correct documents and submit them to different sub departments in order to have the right documents to get re submitted and signed and chopped by the primary departments.

12 years is quick for a communist country.

Mock the "chinese communist" as you may, while the rest of the world is getting more and more communistic. State-owned enterprises are going IPO in China, while the US has been busy nationalizing. There is nothing communistic about modern China. It's remains just a boilerplate.

It's not lame if it's over a principle. Which is what this sort of thing should be over. The fact that they have just started to notice a few potentially infringing fonts in some products is not a measure of their politics, but of the enormity and scope of their government. Plus the fact that the whole world is pressuring Beijing to cooperate in cracking down on wholesale copyright infringement factories pumping out bad bootlegs of almost any digital media. Taking on Microsoft looks impressive, and sends a message.
