I am planning on pre-ordering an iPhone and my question is does an AMEX have any insurance/coverage when you use it to purchase an iPhone.

You'll have to check with AMEX as different cards offer different things. My AMEX Blue adds an additional year onto the warranty whereas my Gold card doesn't impact purchases at all.

I'm using the Blue, and used their extended warranty already a couple of times.

It's pretty hassle free.

Is there any additional charge to use the warranty?

Not with the Cash Blue card.

It's free, part of the card benefits.

Back when the original iPhone shipped at $600, and then dropped quickly by $200, Apple was nice enough to give us early adopters a $100 gift card, and Amex covered the other $100.
So yea, props to Amex.
