A dear friend is getting married in Chicago in early May. I am in Boston. I fly AirTran a lot and was glad to see they had a "2 day special" on a bunch of flights. The website clearly says that Boston to Chicago Midway is $49 each way. Excellent! AirTran Airways - Specials Sale Fares

When I used that link and selected my dates, I was only given fares as low as $99. Huh? Thinking it was a glitch I called AirTran. I am an Elite Member and have the AirTran Credit Card. Never thought there would be an issue. The CSR told me, "That fare is unavailable." Why, I asked. "It is." We went back and forth on this a few times. I asked why does the website advertise this is an active, current special when it is "unavailable". I got no good answer.

In the end AirTran was still among the cheapest and so I used them, but it is still frustrating to see a live deal, only to get the old switch-a-roo.

Yeah. Welcome to Travel on the Internets.

I've been pricing vacations on Travelocity, Expedia and Priceline.
A few times the packages (and prices) I saw either disappeared or rose in price by alot, only to return again after clearing my web cookies. Hmmm.

Dealing only with airlines is another matter - I've been trying to unload 100k in FF miles for the past year, and have been met with nothing but restrictions or overly inflated ticket values. It suddenly costs thousands to fly to Miami?!? BS....

The worst? Redeeming Campanion tickets through American Express (buy one, get one free)- a lesson in futility at best. Retarded departure times, 3 stops, bring your own jet fuel....
But hang in there, there is a deal out there for you.

There's no switch-a-roo here. There are tons of $49 BOS-MDW or MDW-BOS tickets available on Airtran on Tuesdays and Wednesdays (those are usually the cheapest days to fly anyway, since there is the least demand to fly on those days). Just because the fare is advertised doesn't mean it's available on every flight on every day. Every fare has terms and conditions; most of the time they require you to fly on certain days, sometimes through specific airports, and the number of seats available in each fare bucket is limited.

Find your ticket ITA Software (the company that provides the back end to Orbitz, Expedia, etc) and then book it with the airline. Looks like Northwest is generally the low-fare carrier for BOS-Chicago at $139-168 round trip, with stops in DTW.

Airlines are one of the few industries that seem to get away with treating their customers with utter contempt. Them and car towing companies.

I'd pay a fortune to fly on flights that were comfortable, enjoyable, and treated me as if I was an important human being.
