Bull moose die, locked together by horns
It was the aroma of rotting moose meat that led to a grisly discovery on the University of Alaska Anchorage campus Friday morning.
Two dead bull moose were found in the woods near the arts building. The two animals were locked at the antlers.
Department of Fish and Game biologists say it appears at least one of them suffered a broken neck.
Moose are in their rutting period right now, fighting for the right to mate.
During the rut, they're fighting, they're actively fighting so the chances of them getting their antlers locked together exists, and sometimes it just does happen, says Jessy Coltrane of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
According to biologists, the animals probably died early this week. It was the odor from their decaying bodies that led to their discovery.
Biologists say they hope to sell the entangled antlers during next year's Fur Rendezvous auction.
Glad I don't have to fight to fsck!
