Any onw know the definitive way to tell Google maps to stop talking? (iphone app)

Sometime I arrive, and click all the x's off.

While in navigation mode, see the little vertical line of three dots at the lower right corner? Tap that. One of the options is "Mute." Mute works.

No idea really. I've noted that Google Maps takes a while to quit, but that shouldn't let it "keep talking."

Can you kill it from the "task manager"?

I'm sure I'm not using the approved name.

When you double-press the home button, you get a strip of all the apps you've run since you've booted. If you swipe it up, it should theoretically kill the app.

It looks like this:



If you slide left and right, you go through the apps you've run. If you slide the image of the app up, it should kill it. If Google Maps was the last thing you used, it should be in the first slot past the home screen.

I've heard of that trick, but don't how it works. I'll try to Google it.

Ah, now got it, the image of the app up, above the image, not the icon! Went to you tube!
I've had all my apps on for months not knowing that!

They're not all really "on" like with a non-mobile OS. If you don't use an app for awhile, it gets pushed out of memory automatically.

There's so little RAM on these things you can use Safari for 10 minutes and everything will have probably cleared out by then. The "task manager" makes it look like other stuff is running, but it's just a graphic.

As I understand it, very.

The desktop has what you call true multitasking. All the programs you run keep running no matter what. If you run out of RAM, the computer works magic so everything still runs, it just runs slower.

I don't know what Apple calls the multitasking on iOS, but it's not like that. It's much more restrictive. Unless your app jumps through special hoops, like Google Maps does, if you're not actually using an app, the OS can quit the app, and it will if RAM gets tight.

So, the list which I called the "task manager", is a list of every app you've launched (since your last reboot), but from an internal standpoint, the OS has actually quit all but the most recently used ones.

Thanks guys, great info. Hence no need to quit iphone apps really, unless you have a hang up... Would never know!
