so i changed all my icons in the HIToolbox.rsrc and they show up in the big view but when i switch to the column or list view it shows the old versions of the icons... does anyone know how to fix this???

Most likely the new icons you added don't have any smaller scales to them. They're just 128x128 icons. You'll also need to add 48x48, 32x32, 16x16, and 8x8 versions of the icon to get every size possible. It might even ask for smaller ones as well.
