Hi. I was wondering.
Does a fast 7200 RPM hard disk limit the battery life a the new MBP ? Compared to a 5400 RPM drive i.e.
Thanks

Not sure about the MBP, but I swapped out the 4200 rpm drive for a 7200 rpm one in my Powerbook 1.25, and haven't really noticed a difference in battery life. I haven't measured it exactly, but it's not significant, if there is one.

If you believe the hype, the new 7200rpm HDs are meant to be similar in power usage to the 5400rpm.

The "hype" is usually on track. While startup current usage may be somewhat higher, normal operation of a faster hard drive should not perceptibly impact battery life. That's how the drives are designed.

Hype doesn't even factor in. You can check power consumption specs at the manufacturers' websites. It's about the same.

We must warn you that the newest, fastest drives use more battery power. We'll report on those specifics in a subsequent article -- but suffice to say, "You can't have it both ways."

The power consumption specs are available from Seagate/Hitachi... generally less than a quarter watt (~1% of total laptop power consumption) difference.
