Sperm donor ordered to pay child support.

Gentleman, if you doubted that the courts in this country are screwed up, all doubt should now disappear.

Unbelievable.

That is about the dumbest thing I have ever heard.

P.S.- This should be in the Political Lounge.

On first blush, it sounds pretty dumb. On the other hand, he'd been sending the kid gifts and letters and money signed "dad" for years, which is also fairly whack. So this may in fact be a case of self-pwnage rather than ultimate injustice.

He screwed up by claiming the child, even going as far as signing the birth certificate. He can only blame himself.

I agree. You can’t give up all rights and claims to the child and then still consider yourself the ‘dad’ of the child. Either you’re in the kid’s life as a father (figure) or you’re not. If you’re going to have regular contact with the kid, send him gifts and cards signed ‘dad’, and generally building up an image of yourself as the boy’s father, you’re effectively being a parent, and you should be just as liable to pay child support as if you’d been with the mother and simply left her and the kid.

So does he have to pay for all the years that he "missed"? Did I miss how this even came about.. As in why did the women come after the sperm donor/father for the money.

Yeah, the story said nothing about that.
