I've got it in Target disc mode atm having run fsck over it and tech Tools and disk utility none of which encountered any errors.
Am I looking at slinging apref file away or an archive and install?
thanks

Any other peripherals/devices connected?
Try booting into safe mode (hold down shift at startup).

Added any new RAM to it? Didn't we have an issue of crashing with your MBP a while ago?

It had 1GB (2x512) when it started doing it, now has 2x 1GB fitted but still no start.
RAM issue was with my MBP, this is a black MB. MBP ended up getting a new logic board and has been fine for a while now.

Login Window is dying for some reason. Archive and Install is my first suggestion.
