Hey, I'm new to the RC5 thing (I just switched from SETI@Home) and I have a "newbie-ish" question. Is 1 block of data (the blocks they count for milestones) the set of the 24 packets downloaded at a time, or is 1 block one of the 24 packets?

In case I wasn't clear, I mean like when it says "[Jul 30 01:48:29 UTC] RC5-72: Completed CA:5D281FFF:00000000 (1.00 stats units)", do I need 25,000 of those for a milestone, or do I need 25,000 of these messages, "[Jul 30 01:27:02 UTC] RC5-72: Retrieved stats unit 24 of 24 (100.00%) "? Thanks!

I think it is one block of data, but don't worry, if you got a G4 it will do a bunch of those a day.

Our RC5-72 stats use the same blocks dnet uses. For this project, there are 2^32 keys per one stats block, that is a little over 4,000,000,000 keys.

If your G4 crunches 4 million keys per second, then it would take 1,000 seconds to a stats block, that would be 16 minutes and 40 seconds.

1 "block" = 1 "stats unit" = 1 "packet." Your client is set to upload and download a certain number of stats units at once, so that it doesn't have to connect to the server for every one. I forget what the default is-- something like every six or eight hours. The client will figure how fast you're crunching, then calculate how many units to download to keep it busy for the amt. of time set in prefs. (it grabbed you 24 w/u's because it calculated that it will need that many to keep it busy for x amount of time) You can change the amount of time to crunch between connecting by running the -config argument.

select 2) buffer and buffer update options

then select 12) Fetch work threshold
to set a specific quantity of work units to fetch/crunch before flushing to the stats server.

or select 13) Fetch time threshold
to set an amount of time to crunch between fetch/flushing.

Whichever one you chose and configure will override the other.

I'd go with time, and maybe set it to 8 or 10 hours, so that you fetch/flush a few times a day. That way, your stats won't be too erratic from one day to the next.

Oh, and get cracking!

Thanks everyone! Unfortunatly, it sent my first 24 WUs at around 12:30am UTC, so I'll have to wait another day for my stats to be uploaded. But so far, I've crunched 113 WUs, and I'm 94% done with my 114th, so I think I'm in pretty good shape.

What speed CPU are you running, and how many keys per sec are you getting? Just curious.

I get around 3.9 Mkeys per sec on my 450s (avg. 60-70 w/u's per day)and 20Mkeys on my dual gig (avg. 425 w/u's per day).

That sounds about right. You should then get around 140 to 160 "credits" for that box, per day if my math is any good.
