Based on need. I haven't bought a new machine in 3.5 years because the one I currently have is enough for what I do. I've added more ram, a new video card and a new sound card to it though.
That said, I will be getting a new machine at the end of this summer.

My 700 MHz, Combo-Drive, G4 iMac was ordered the month they were announced. What was that? 2002, I believe.
My 12" PB G4 was bought last June.
If another new iMac design is unveiled soon, my wife will have to tie me down to keep me from wanting it... Although logically I know I don't *need* it.
Before my current machines, I had a 400 Mhz, G3-based, 2000 model iMac DVSE. Ironically, that old G3 was the most reliable of the three... With uptimes interrupted only by OS updates.
Generally, I'm buying a new computer every 2 years or so. Which really is stupid, unless you're doing work which requires such aggressive updating... Which I'm not.

2-3 years which is really scary considering these things cost $5000 each time.

It was about every year with cheap PCs and my eMac, but this G5 should last longer.

My dad bought our beige G3 some 5 or 6 years ago (whenever they first came out), and last year he bought me my iBook. Even though there's a large gap between the two, both are G3 machines (the beige fellow's still running 8.6 though, while mine's running Panther), so I'm hoping for a G5 in the future.

Whenever my old one doesn't do something I want it to do. I have a QS 733 G4 which I don't use very often, and an iBook G3 466 SE which I use all the time. I'll be looking at a new PB or iBook soon but I'm waiting for an update.

My peecee upgrade is almost finished. Either I'll have the fastest Athlon64 in the world - or the coldest dead Athlon64 in the world. Doesn't make me no never mind, I reckon.

Seems to be some very high refresh rates here, especially considering Apple's prices. I can see why Apple can stay in business!
I wanted to change my buying habits to buy *more* often than before, so I could sell my computers and get some money back to put towards a new machine. However, I don't even know if I will be selling any of my computers now... see my sentimental computer thread

Hmm about every 2-4 years I buy a new machine (PC)
Although i am hoping i can get a good five - six years outta this 1Ghz 17" iMac, and never go back to windows again.

Powerbook G4 (Ti 1ghz) is 18 months old now, and I have barely had a single urge/need to upgrade yet.
Original iMac 15" 800Mhz is over two year old now, and it still runs like a champ. Have upgraded the RAM, and it's still going fine.

Every 4 years. But upgrade what I can in my computer after about 2 years. Now I'm waiting for a G5 powerbook. I know it might take a while. Unles I go crazy and buy a G5 tower also.

3-4 years. Usually with just a RAM upgrade in between.
I got my B&W G3 right after it came out (Jan 1999?) and had it until the 800MHz TiBooks came out (March/April 2002?), which I got one of immediately. I hope it'll last me another two years (summer 2005? Or maybe Jan 2006?). Probably want to double the RAM to 1GB before long.
