Step 1: Dressed as a ninja pile them up as high as possible.
Step 2: Have a friend coincidentally film you as the pile collapses on you causing "injury".
Step 3: I think you may have guessed step 3 by now.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

I stopped picking up phone books years ago. I'm slightly surprised that they still print too many of them.

It's been at least 8 years for me, and it's not like the things have maintained a constant level of marginal utility. They're easily an order of magnitude more useless now than 8 years ago.

I had completely forgotten about this story.

My apartment is set up sort of weird. People tend to think my front door enters into some type of lobby deal, which means people off the street trying to open it is a relatively common occurrence. A minor irritation assuming I've remembered to lock the front door.

So, I was in the can, burning a mule...

I barely need to finish the story here. You can do the math.

The twist is, after I collect myself, greet him, tell him I don't want the yellow pages, and start ushering him towards the door from my living room, he turns to me and asks "can I get a business card?"

They drop off new phone books at my front door. I check to see if there's anything important with them (CD with the listings like AT&T did recently, etc.) and then I recycle them. The "phone book" is a large, bulky version of all that paper spam you get in your mail box, since it's really all intended to be advertising anyway. So I treat it as such and recycle it. Hey, the paper spammers are supporting the Postal Service, and the phone book people are employing all those schleps that drop off phone books, so the least I can do is cooperate enough to keep 'em paying people, right?

We still have a paper phone book, it gets used - rarely, but yes. Sometimes when googling something (shoe repair + my town for instance) you'll get all kinds of wrong results- wrong town, shoe stores, fake pages that are just linkbot spam, etc. The book at least is more accurate for my local area. And it has coupons.

Crumpled up pages from these go well with the kindling in my wood fireplace.

Came in handy last year because I was heating the house with my gas and wood fireplace. We were doing some renovations, so I didn't want to use the forced air furnace as it would blow construction dust around the house.

Other than that I don't think we've used our phone books for anything else since we moved into this house 5 years ago. Well, maybe once or twice when we first moved in.

When a phone book shows up on my doorstep it immediately goes right into the recycle bin. I wonder how many trees are still being killed to produce these things?

We still get about 3 different local papers delivered to our house. I've called to have them stop, which usually works for a while and then they start coming again.

I've trained my two year old to recycle them though. Whenever he sees one he grabs it and proudly runs it back to the recycle bin.

What this?

A newspaper?

What do we do with a newspaper?

Recycle it!

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

I do the same thing. Also use them for my charcoal chimney for when I BBQ.

We get a new book dropped at our mailbox. We use it fairly often. I live in a relatively small city and it's a lot quicker to scan a section of the yellow pages than it is to wade through a Google search.

The adoption agency my wife works at places ads in the books all across the state. They get a good number of new birth mothers thanks to the ads.
