i've recently set my ps3 to work with a basic windows computer that will act as a media server. now, my question is, is there a free ripping program that will allow me to rip my dvd collection to mpeg-2 format? windows media player (which ps3 supports as a media server program) currently does not support mp4 or avi. please help.
thanks in advance!

I second the recommendation for Handbrake.

I would have suggested MacTheRipper first as it's the only app that I'm aware of that will rip in the native form (into a TS Video file) and also break the copy protection too.
I've have yet to find a DVD it wouldn't allow me to rip!

I believe a combination of ffmpegX and mactheripper would do the job you require.

mactheripper (MTR) gives you native MPEG-2
Are you looking to reduce the filesize somehow and keep it at MPEG-2, or is MTR not working?

when i rip using MTR, it rips it to VTS. i'm looking for something that rips directly to original mpeg-2, not just mpeg-2 svcd. the ps3 is really touchy and sensitive, so unless the format is perfect, it wont play the file.

First rip the DVD with MTR. Second, encode the Video_TS with HandBreak. To make it easier, you could rip a few DVDs and then set up a queue in HB.
HandBreak has a PS3 preset.

You don't need to rip first with MTR. Handbrake can rip straight from the disc.

HandBreak has a PS3 preset.
the PS3 preset rips to mp4. currently, my ps3 is having a really hard time reading mp4, so i want to rip to mpeg2 which it reads without any problems.
