i have a g5 dual power mac running tiger. i want to upgrade to leopard w/CPU Drop-In DVD. will it work or do i need to get a full install kit?

Where did you get that DVD from? I don't believe G5s were being shipped when Leopard was released, but my memory got blurry around the PPC/Intel & Tiger/Leopard area.

yeah, not going to work OR be ethical/legal. Pay for Leopard, or wait for Snow Leopard.

Hmm, not a clue I'm afraid, and since that didn't come with a Mac you bought, it's not legal to run. I would buy a retail disc or wait for Snow Leopard - which I don't think is too far away now.

AFAIK the CPU Drop-In DVD would work. But you would need to keep your 10.4 discs just in case you would need to perform a reinstallation at any given time (a hassle), so I would look for a full 10.5 disc, besides being the legal way to do it.

The drop in DVD will work just fine to upgrade 10.4 on a G5. It's not licensed for that, nor is that DVD to have been sold without the hardware it shipped with, but it will install just fine.

I'm pretty sure it's Intel-only, given that that's the only processor type its ever shipped with.

No build of Leopard is Intel-only. I have used my drop in DVD to do exactly what the OP mentioned. It worked with no issue on a G5.

ChrisF is correct. Apple does not make machine specific drop-in discs or retail discs. They support both PowerPC and Intel CPU's on the same disc. That will, of course, change with 10.6. It's not like the Mac OS 8x-9x days were you had system specific discs being shipped with certain machines with specific hardware enabler software.

That said, Apple does code the installers on restore discs that come with Macs to work with that model only. The OS on the disc isn't machine specific, but the installer is coded to only work with a machine ID that matches the model it shipped with.

The problem I'm running into with the drop-in DVD is that it says it can't find my 10.4 OS (which is 10.4.11). I'm running this on a MBP G5. Any thoughts?

He's passive agressively pointing out that there is not such thing as a MBP G5. A G5 is a PowerPC processor that never was put into laptops. MacBook Pros use intel processors.

As long as you have an existing OS installed on the computer, you can install Leopard from a drop in DVD. Just select Clean Install before you do it.

No, that wasn't passive-aggressive. The poster asked a question and provided incorrect info thus making it more difficult to give a correct response.
