A new photo represents the first leak of a rear shell for Apple's low-cost iPhone, claims Tactus. Unlike the shell for the iPhone 5, which mixes glass and aluminum, the one for the low-cost phone is believed to be made of uniform plastic, rounded at the edges. The component is estimated to be about 0.4 to 0.6mm thick, but part of a device that might measure 9mm thick, 120mm tall, and about 62 to 65mm in width. That would make it both thicker and wider than the iPhone 5, but slightly shorter.

Tactus also cites rumors that the phone will use a 32nm A5 processor, a 3.5-inch Retina display, and a 5-megapixel camera. If so the hardware would be considerably weaker than the widely-reported iPhone 5S, which is expected to use an A7 processor, a 4-inch screen, and a camera exceeding the 8 megapixels of the iPhone 5 and 4S. The compromises might be needed, though, if Apple wants to compete on price with other budget phones while maintaining its usual profit margins.

It's lastly claimed that the factory producing the shells is working on black, white, blue, red, and yellow colors. iPhones have traditionally only been available in black and white, but different colors may be easier to accomplish when only relying on plastic. It's speculated that Apple could put the phone on sale October 15th for $300 unlocked.
