Okay, I'm interested in the true origins of Wicca, their practices and history. Can anyone recommend some reliable sites? I know a fair bit about the modern wicca but I think I'm correct in thinking its not the same as it was?

Now now lets not look at the roots of something... lets just remember Wicca is the trendy pagan religion of today...

This might be of some help:

Oh, and I dated a pagan high priestess for several months. Yep, kinky as heck but, unfortunately, also barking mad.

Wicca is a modern organized version of many ancient anglo-saxon, celtic, and norse religions, some parts predating Christianity by a thousand years or so.

If you're interested in it's origins, where it came from, etc. you can just hit the library. There are litterally thousands of books on the subject. Humanities and anthropology sections are the place to start. Probably some good videos to rent too, I remember seeing a great special on Wicca on the History channel. Your best bet is to ask a librarian, they have a better idea of what books they have and what might be good reading material. I would recommend anything by a non-Christian university covering humanities and/or anthropology for an unbiased look at the origins of Wicca.

I dated a Wiccan girl for about 7 months.

I now understand clinical insanity.

But yes, she was kinky... and that's what's important.

A bit like the, mostly, US phenomenon of born-again Christians, and those who believe in a 'personal' relationship with Jeeeesus!

If anything, those who discover Wicca, can be said that they have discovered their past; certainly if you're from a country on which Pagan beliefs existed long before Christianity become the popular thing.

Anyway. Over here in Scotland, Wiccans/Pagans etc have a long history, stretching back centuries. So there's quite a body of knowledge out there.

+1 dated a kinky, yet insane, wiccian girl. Fell apart in less than a year, but a wild ride while it lasted.

Wow, that sounds a lot like what Jesus did with his boys own club. A tradition still going strong today with all the paedophilic priests coming out of the woodwork.

Zing.
My husband was an altar boy under notorious pedophilic priest John Geoghan many years ago. Fortunately, Father Geoghan was "transferred" from his parish in less than a year for "unknown reasons".

Wicca is just an attempt to become a recognized (profitable) religion. It's been around for hundreds of years.

Most people that I know that are Wicca are young and in college. Their "religion" fades after a few years in the real world.

You might want to check out Silver RavenWolf's Teen Witch Kit.

Actually, I'm only half-joking. The kit really does exist -you can buy it on Amazon at the link I provided- but I very much doubt you actually want to check it out. Has crass commercialism finally infected even Wicca?

Wicca as we know it is about fifty years old, give or take a decade. It incorporates known and theorized practices from religions much older than that, but those religions did not use this name.

50 years is relatively new

I would bet that this religion could technically date back thousands of years. It all depends upon what you consider their core beliefs to be. I think it's an interesting religion that gets a bad name from people that want to be witches and wear all black so that they can appear to be alternative.

Well, I did say I was half-joking. The kit really does exist, and may as well be included for the sake of completeness. Most Wiccans I know, however, scoff at the thing.

It's not stupid, it just is. We have freedom of religion. So you can pray to trees if you really want to. You can create a web site that tries to recruit members to your tree religion... but at the end of the day, don't expect others to accept your religion as a real religion.

Wicca has a MAJOR identity crisis. It seems to have a "catch all" attitude.

Also, any religion with the term "neopagan" and "witchcraft" attached to it usually falls on deaf ears.

Feel free to make arguments for how unfair that is, but it's how it is and it's not going to change any time soon.

actually, i was referring to them dropping their religion after they have entered "teh real world" as being "stupid". what would not being in college have anything to do with it?

errr. i have heard of people trying to get others to "believe" that the world is 6000 years old, based on their religion. i don't see how this is any better (or worse) than praying to trees...or believing that you're a witch.

Personally, I don't know much about Wicca and paganism (except, maybe, that it seems to be sort of popular among some kinds of "anarchists", especially on the web) - but, on a related front, my girlfriend - or, rather, "womanfriend" - introduced me to Rudolf Steiner's Anthroposophy some years ago: not quite paganism, but, actually, a very interesting way of spiritual growth, so to say. While being insufficiently conscious on the political front, IMHO, Steiner certainly seemed to be quite conscious of the main spiritual problems of humanity, in the 20th century and beyond: a really unique personality! Being somehow a genius, few people seem(ed) to take him seriously, sadly...

The freedom of all is essential to my freedom. - Mikhail Bakunin

Refering to the idea of homsexuality, hence the term 'boys club'.. Lesbian predators for Wiccans, young boy predators for the Christians.

The beliefs have been in constant practise for thousand of years, through various names. Pagan beliefs in the UK have continued uninterrupted since before Christianity, but they have spent a good many hundreds of years hidden due to the fear of persecution by Christian hands. It;s realy only in the last 100 or so years that it's flourished once again, but this in itself has lead to various branches of those old beliefs becoming popular today.
