Cheaper fix DVD drive or get external DVD drive?

My MBP DVD drive is working but it won't reject the DVD for some reason and I have to use a pincher to take the DVD out. How much do you think the cost to have this fixed? or should I just get an external DVD drive? thanks guys!.

Short term: get an external. They aren't "cheap" but they aren't very expensive either, and you can (and I think should for this application) get a drawer-type drive instead of a slot loading drive.
Now look in your Yellow Pages for a Mac shop in your area and call 'em to see how much they'd charge for replacing the drive. This is assuming that you're out of warranty, of course, because that sort of thing is covered by AppleCare (even the 1 year free stuff).

Yeah, I'm out of warranty and I probably should just get external as you said cause I know APPLE will suck my blood if I bring this to them.

If you can afford it, try and get a drive with litescribe. I didn't think I'd be using the feature much when I got my external, but it looks SO much nicer seeing a computer made etched label on a CD or DVD than one scribbled onto with sharpie.

Since you're out of warranty, consider getting an OWC alternative installed. $265 for service part super drive vs $85 for OWC alternative. They're OEM comparable units and sometimes have better specs than the original you're replacing.
Often Service Providers will offer this service as a mail-in or carry-in service, so check out the locator in your area and ask for an estimate. As a ball park, I would quote a customer the drive plus 1.5 hours of labor... Food for thought....

Both will work with Macs; bring your own disk burning software (Disk Utility will work in a pinch).
