if you have a MacBook Pro 17 can you please post what version of SMC that you have in the about this mac section?
i got my Mac about 4 months ago and the SMC version is 1.14f5

there is an update on Apple's site:
Apple - Support - Downloads - MacBook Pro 17-inch SMC Firmware Update
this is for version 1.5f10 and is said to fix fan behavior issues.
it will not install on my Mac and gives me the error:
Alert your computer does not need this update.

I talked to support and they were stumped by this because the version numbers appear to be correct for an update.

Please post your SMC version and let me know what you think. thanks again.
oh and the issue is that my fan is acting all kinds of wonky.

under normal load is spins silently.
then under heavier load and more programs and such it ramps up to pretty loud.
it used to go back down to silent when the temp got under control, but since one of the updates and i do not remember which one it spins high and never decreases until i shut it off.
it is very odd and support just shakes their head at it.

Hi,
My smc on my MBP 17" is 1.5f10. I bought mine back in August. I dont really have any fan issues, plus I got smc fan control running to keep my fan minimum at 3200. No problems so far.

17" C2D MBP, SMC Version 1.14f5. Tolerable heat even when driven hard with 3 GB RAM, no fan problems. Quiet, seldom does the fan engage.
