Hi all... Saw a TechTV spot on the new G4 w DVDR and went out and bought one... I have already taken a tape from 1991 and created a DVD... Cool stuff... A testament to how easy the Apple is to use...

But, I have many questions. I have been reading these forumns for over a week and have not seen these specific questions discussed:

1. IE under OS9. When I hit the back buttun, I go back to the TOP of the previous page. Under Windows, IE will go back to the point I was reading on the previous page. Is there any way to correct this?

2. Office 10... Has a release date been announced? I know I can get Office 9 off the Education page for $200 and that the upgrade to 10 will be $150... I was thinking I should just wait til 10 comes out and get it off the Apple Education page for $200... How long after it comes out will it take Apple to add 10 to the education page? Anyone know of a way to get Office 2001 cheeper than $200. The auction sites are all still pretty high...

3. OS 10.1... Any ETA on that? I saw some notes saying maybe the end of September and I saw some notes saying Sept 1... I am confused... I would like to use 10.04 now, but the iDVD software does not work...

4. Will OS 10.1 include the new iDVD software?

5. I purchased VirtualPC for DOS and upgraded the drive image to 98... Seemed to go fine, but after I run a PC session in 98, I cannot log out of OS9... (I used multiple accounts so my wife and I can have separate bookmarks)... Any ideas?

6. Should I change mice? The one that comes with the G4 is cool, but I miss the right-click and scroll button. Are these things supported if I put a different mouse on? Which mouse?

7. Is the hard disk in the G4 IDE? Can I just pop in a 100GB IDE and go?

8. I have been having a really hard time finding good MAC sites on the net. This (MacNN) is about the best I have found for news and forumns... Are there any others? How about good sites for shareware and freeware?

9. Is there a way in OS9 to view shares on a Win2K server without using Virtual PC? How about in OS 10 or 10.1?

Thanks to all those who help me out here... All my friends are PC people and have almost dis-owned me for buying the Mac...

=)

I only have answers to a few but here goes

6. Yes you should change mice, I'd recommend any optical mouse by either Microsoft or Logitech.

7. The HDD is indeed IDE (in fact EIDE) so just about any drive would do...I'm not sure about the size however as I've heard of some computers not being able to recognize large drives...but in the case of the new G4 (which I have as well) I'm fairly sure a giant like that would work.

Some great sites to check out are as follows:

For downloads http://www.zdnet.com/downloads/mac/download.html

For icons and such http://www.iconfactory.com

For some cool articles and past Mac stats http://www.lowendmac.com

For a whole lotta stuff http://www.resexcellence.com

And for another cool forum http://www.macnet2.com

Hope I could be of some assistance to ya.

Sek answered a couple and I'll do the same:

1. I've found that in IE, it really depends on the page you're viewing whether or not IE will take you back to the exact spot you left, or reload the whole page. I can only suggest dropping a suggestion to Mactopia.

2. Office X release date hasn't been announced yet. It sounds as if they're trying to get it out around the same time as 10.1, but don't hold me to that...

3. Stick with 9 for now. 10.1 is September. That's as close as you'll get to a release date. .

8. Try VersionTracker to keep up with software updates.
http://www.maccentral.com for some additional news. They also are starting to develop a lively forum area...

9. Can't view shares on a Windows box unless you use 3rd party software like Dave or Connectix's DoubleTalk. The Dave client is free for OS X (For now) and 10.1 will have it built into the OS....

Enjoy you're new mac you lucky dog!

Mike- You're way ahead of me and my iMac, but, I would like to weigh in on the mouse question. I ditched the hockey puck mouse that came with my iMac (1/00) and bought the MS optical mouse. I really like it, as it seems to fit my hand well, works flawlessly and I love the scroll wheel. I highly recommend it. Good luck.

Applelinks.com: Welcome http://www.applelinks.com/

Apple Software Home Page http://support.info.apple.com/ftp/swhome.html

Mac Community by Bill Smith of Mac the Knife Boards http://bmtk.8m.com/

My other favorite forum:
Techsurvivors - powered by Infopop http://www.techsurvivors.com/cgi-bin...i?action=intro

Got tons more, but many of them are in Applelinks and Mac Community anyway. Happy surfing!

Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Yonkers can have better TV reception.
