I found an old 6100/66 with a DOS card waiting to go to auction at my work. I plugged it in and it worked fine so I let my co-worker take it home. It has a working monitor with the old Apple proprietary plug along with an adapter to plug into the DOS card. It all works, but it is still loaded with 7.1 and a bunch of old software.
I want to update it, but I don't know how far I can go (OS wise) before everything really starts to get bogged down. I don't know how much RAM it has but I intend to find out soon. My options at this point are 7.6, 8.6, 9.0 and 9.1. I think that 9.0 and 9.1 are out, so I guess my question is how fast is 8.6 on a 66 MHz 601 (and with how much RAM)? If it's dog-slow, I'll load 7.6 and the newer versions of the apps separately or add RAM as needed. Any feedback is more than appreciated.

The best performace tip i can give is to find a level 2 cache card for it. it will improve performance greatly no matter what the size.

Mac OS 8.5 and later versions of Mac OS does not support DOS Card anymore.
I think OS 8.1 is your best choice.

I have to agree with BLAZE_MkIV; a cache card would speed things up quite a bit. They are usually dirt cheap, from eBay especially. I would also reccomend getting a RAM upgrade of at least 32 MB since they are also so cheap and easy to install.

I strongly recommend Mac OS 8.1.

Thanks for all the tips. I would love to put 8.1 on it, but I only have access to a copy of 7.6 right now. In the interim it will do, but I'll try to get my hands on the stuff. The cache card also sounds like a good idea. The nice thing about this is when he gets the money for a new system (I'm pushing for a Mac of course) I think I get the old 6100. Whoo-hooo!
