It's been happening for a while but lately it's been bothering me enough to finally attempt to find out what's happening.

Here's a copy of the Log;

There's something going wrong with the Intel GMA X3100 driver.

Have you tried deleting DVD Player prefs?

10.5.2 is coming soon. Considering that this GPU is very new to the Mac, it's likely that there will be improved drivers included.

Interesting, I didn't think DVD Player.app used GPU acceleration.

Do you get KPs from any other apps, especially those that use GPU acceleration?

I've been having this issue as well. When the DVD application launches I get a kernel panic. But when the computer restarts and I open it again, it works. After a few days, if I try DVD Player, it gives me a kernel panic.

This is on a 2 month old MacBook with 10.5.2. Anyone else experiencing this?

Does this happen to anyone else? I need to make a presentation that uses the DVD Player and I can't have it crashing all the time.

After some googling, this is apparently a known problem.

Can you work around it using VLC? It'll play DVDs.

Apparently this happens on MacBooks with 4GB of RAM. It works well on a fresh boot because you have more than 1.5GB of free RAM. The crash will happen, so I've read, on MacBooks with 4GB of RAM and less than 1.5GB free (macrumors.com's forums).

It doesn't, but it does composite directly to the video buffer (Ever wonder why you can't snapshop a DVD Video?).

So, here we busted the myth of "more RAM is always better"

on my 12" PB, it was the Leopard Graphics update that killed the DVD Player, there are long threads about this on Apple's boards. I hadn't heard that it was affecting any Intel laptops, though. YMMV.

Anyway, I confirmed that the Graphics Update was at fault on my 12", and now (much weary reinstalls later) everything's fine in 10.5.2 without the Graphics Update (= set to be ignored.)

It was the "DVD Player KP - dead" in your thread title that made me remember my ordeal.

Hm... I have a MacBook with 4GB of RAM. Haven't heard this problem happening with any other computers beside the 12" PowerBook. And this happened after the Graphics Update right after 10.5.2.

I guess VLC it is until it's fixed! Oh, should I take this problem to the Apple Store or just wait until something is released?

Well, you can spend the time doing a reinstall, minus the Leopard Graphics Update, or you can spend the time going to the Apple Store.

I have no idea whether that would solve the problem on an Intel laptop, but the dead DVD Player is a wee bit suggestive.

I took it to an Apple Store and after having looked at it, they don't know either. They said they have never heard of this problem before and they said to try a reinstall. =[

Just do an archive-install, then upgrade to 10.5.2 but not the graphics update.

I need the Graphics Update because it fixed the application Second Life on my MacBook. Without it, I would get a kernel panic as well.

The Mac Genius just told me to try it in hopes that it was a fluke in the operating system. He had said he had never heard of this problem.
