I checked the archives but didn't find anything definative.

What's my best option in order to read Smart Media cards on my 15" AlBook.

I have an older reader, but it's just not getting it done for me.

Any suggestions?

you can get new USB 2.0 smart media or even multi-format card readers from just about any of those compusa, bestbuy type stores. They run in the order of $20+ onwards nowadays, get them during sales and that makes them even cheaper. That should be a lot fast than your older (USB 1.0?) card reader.

I would say the best option is a PC slot reader. You probably aren't using the slot for anything else anyway.

Hmmm. The slot reader option sounds interesting.

You're right, I don't use the slot for anything right now...in fact, I wasn't even sure how useful it really was.
(Now, that statement, taken out of context, is rather awkward).

I'll need to persue that option.

Thanks.

Thanks Kidkit.
I'll hit some of the shops and check out the newer USB readers.

Mine always triggers OS9 and I wasn't sure if that was going to be a constant issue even with a newer reader.

Speed had been an issue with my PC.

Thanks again.

Why? That should not happen with any reader unless you've got some sort of weird setting/software.

I have both PCMCIA and USB 2.0 readers for my Mac, for SmartMedia (and CompactFlash). (I don't even have OS 9 loaded, BTW.)

PCMCIA readers usually work fine, but the Smart Media ones cost a lot more compared to both USB SmartMedia readers and PCMCIA CompactFlash readers. On the bright side, the PCMCIA readers save room, since USB 2.0 readers are bulky in comparison and external.

Yeah, I didn't think I had OS9 installed either.
I just got the PB a few months ago, but the "classic" configuration is triggered when I try to use my old sandisk reader (which had software that I installed).

I plugged the reader in, and the next thing I knew, I was looking at a rainbow colored apple in the top left corner.

I'll just go for a newer reader.

$18 bucks is not a lot for a PCMCIA card and it can remain in PB until needed.
