Is there any way that I can get rpm's or something similar to work on OSX? I don't like the way fink sets up it directories at all. I would like all of these X11 apps to install to the system /lib /usr /bin .....

I tried to do it just by grabbing source code and building all the stuff myself, but I was in a dependency hell.

What is the best way to make OSX behave like regular UNIX, without having to worry about 4 different X11s installed across multiple directories, and multiple roots?
i.e. /sw/bin for fink, /usr/bin for OSX, etc....

not sure if it matters, but I wanna use aqua and not kde or gnome. (although I will use konqueror)

Just to make sure: You know that you don't need to install X11 with fink? Fink works perfectly together with the Apple installed binaries. Just do
Code:
fink install system-xfree86
. This will tell fink that you already installed apples X11.

Also, you can install fink with any prefix you want. You are not bound to '/sw'. Just read the Fink documentation.

All this might already be clear to you. Chris.

FYI, OS X 10.3 (Panther) has a DarwinPorts installer included in the CDs (an optional install, I think)...

Is that on the final CD that was just posted? It wasn't in the last few dev builds.. I got the feeling they decided to pull it.

You can also tell fink to install into /opt. Just type 'fink configure' in the terminal and set it from there.

So it was confirmed that it didn't ship with the final release right?

Looks like I did a somewhat alike duplicate post here.

http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.p...hreadid=199474

With a question about the NetBSD package manager that they claim, and even have a binary for (Mac OS X, Darwin 7).
