Actually I've heard some of his "blues" playing and it's not bad.

Not all of his songs are guitar-wanking and incredible arpeggios and whatnot... he does have some great "songs". Not just amazing musical pieces.

Malmsteen is amazing.

Yep. His first solo album comes close to it, but everything after that consisted of regurgitated phrygian in 32nd notes. He is impressive to watch live however - I saw him about 10 years ago, and it was strange watching someone's fingers move so quickly and accurately, and seemingly without effort.

edit: If you like YM, get Inspiration. Because it consists of covers from bands he was inspired by, his style is a bit more varied.

[edit again for pre-coffee mispellings]

I can think of several players that I would
rather emulate before malmsteen.

- Clapton
- Stevie Ray Vaughn
- David Gilmore
- JImi Hendrix
- Brian Setzer (SWING BABY!)
- Eddie Van Halen
- Roy Cooder

But, malmsteen plays some kickin
classical on his AXE.

My favorite: Fugue for the electric guitar.

Yeah. Why do most amazing guitar players end up wanking their own chain instead of learning how to write a good song? I guess their primary focus is being a master of their craft, but still...it doesn't do it for me. When he discovers that some songs just don't need a guitar solo...that's when I pick up an album.

And his ego is massively large as well.

Note that the original instructional video may have came with a tab book. It looks a lot like he's already (before the vid rip started) shown a style method and now he's showing the viewer how it works in a piece.

Like, check the hand motion at 10 seconds - it's as if he's saying "like that, that's how it looks", like he's finishing off the lesson.

Check the pinky. A lot of his stuff depends on pinky stretches like he's doing here. Once you know his stylisms, this kind of stuff is very good to pop into your daily workouts.

Whew! that was a tough lesson, but I was able to get thru it on my 4th try.

But seriously, is this an instructional lesson for mere mortals? I don't know, Satriani might be able to learn something from it.

I'm going all B9 here but,

less notes,
more base,
more bass,
more space,

more pace,
escape,
silence,
blow me away.

You guys should check out Joe Bonamassa.
He was playing guitar by the time he was 4 years old. When he was 12, he'd already opened for the likes of BB King.
BB was so impressed that he invited Joe onstage with him. "Joes potential is so great that he hasnt begun to scratch the surface,...Hes young, with great ideas. Hes one of a kind, a legend before his time."

He was a member of Bloodline - a group composed of offspring of famous musicians - and the only member who WASN'T offspring of famous musicians.
He's 25/26, but he plays like "an old soul". I've been fortunate enough to meet him in person. Unlike many musicians, he's unassuming, not full of himself; he's managed to keep his feet on the ground despite his fame, so to speak. -He's a 'regular Joe'.
When I saw him in concert, I was mesmerized by his playing, his fingers were like fluid across the fretboard and strings.
While waiting outside before the meet and greet, his bassist came out and hung with us smokers...of course, at first we didn't recognize him, he was just somebody hanging out before the show, we thought.

So flawlessly.. *sigh*
All right, let me be the ******** here. First of all, this is certainly not flawless. Secondly, fast arpeggios and harmonic progressions are made easier (did not say easy all right?) on an electric guitar. I have seen and heard MUCH more impressive on a classical guitar where that kind of 'game' is actually tougher.

He's a pretty good craftsman. Like so many above said, that does not make him a good artist.

A lot of hair bands from the 80s dressed like that - Cinderella, Britney Fox (for all you youngsters - yes, there was a band by that name), Yngwie... (how sad is it that I can identify said 80s bands?)

My oft quoted "Zero Tolerance for Silence" is a warning example of what happens when these craftsters attempt artistry.
I slump in disbelief when this turgid Nitrous Turboguitar hyperplinking c/w fit-inducing paradiddling assaults my lug zone. Surely it's gone far beyond parody. WWF without the subtlety.
Good material for Guantanamo though.

Re Blooze Bar photo;
What an old Bag!
Always wondered what happened to my Great Aunt Aggie after she left for America.
Is she pregnant? God how she's let herself go. One minute a respectable librarian from Invertooshie, the next cavorting & boozing with the Lederhosen brothers in some den of ill-repute surrounded by dreadful Beatles memorabilia.
Her sister would turn in her grave; that's if she was dead of course.
She met that Alex Harvey once though!
