I"m not going to link to the page, because that's exactly what the author wants, but Paul Thurot (of Winsupersite 'fame') has just proven he's a grade A jackass with the following comment on how Apple can 'fix' the iPhone :

Instead of basing its iPhone Web browser on one of the two browsers that represent about 97 percent of all Web traffic (IE and Firefox), Apple uses its own nonstandard Safari browser instead. It doesn't support basic Web technologies like Java or Adobe Flash.
This is inexcusable from someone who claims to be a tech journalist ! 'nonstandard' ??!?! The standards, Paul, are defined by these people. Safari has some of the best support for these standards of any browser. IE, well, doesn't. Flash ? Java ? Neither of these are in any way 'standards' based.

Is this really threadworthy?

Flash support really needs to be done though regardless of Apple's security concerns.

His comment is misleading at best. Flash and Java are both plugin technologies. They shouldn't be integrated into the browser.

That said, I think the iPhone needs flash support. Flash really has become the standard for vector animation on the web. As I recall though, my WM5 phone doesn't do flash either...at least not out of the box. So what's he getting at?

no - but I needed to vent ! I would have email him, but he doesn't provide an address on that page, and I wasn't about to provide more hits trying to find it on his site.

I don't think Flash is a good fit for the iPhone. Flash is a battery-killer.

Flash spikes system resources on my G5, less so on my Core 2 Duo, but still, it's processor intensive. I couldn't imagine it on the iPhone. You'd be measuring battery life in minutes instead of hours.

Too bad for him that Safari seems to be the most popular mobile web browser these days. So much for market share.

Thats because there's a typo. It should read "Paul Thurot proves he's an iPhone jackass."

Only 27%? Jeez, I never saw that!

No other smartphone browser has more than 25% of the market. Ergo, Safari is the most popular.

I don't think Flash necessarily has to be a big resource drain. For some reason it sucks balls under OS X, but this is not the case under Windows or Linux.

The stats on the w3schools site were simply collected from their log files for their site. Why would Joe six pack visit the w3schools site?

I was about to say the same thing as Besson. w3schools represents primarily visitors who are standards focused or reference-interested web developers. This is why their Firefox numbers are so high.

I think practically speaking, Safari is a growing browser, and that's probably attributable to the iPhone's popularity. I'd take roughly drafted with a grain of salt. Dilger's a good writer, but he's definitely biased.

This is why you have to take browser and OS market share numbers with HUGE grains of salt. Arguments based upon these numbers are flimsy at best, IMHO.

At the same time, it's worth remembering that Nokia is shipping all their smart phones with a WebKit based browser.

That is, a browser that behaves and acts exactly like safari in rendering pages, because it uses Apple's framework.

So the numbers should get a little higher than 27%.
