That was an incredibly dumb thing to do. He didn't look particularly mobility-challenged (I know, it's often not visible - I actually teach people about that sort of thing), but I'll bet the anger management issues were not the only problem he had before his fall injuries...

I've never tried to bash in an elevator door. Do they normally require that little momentum to pop out of their channels?

Yes. typically the outside doors hang on a sliding frame that is surprisingly fragile.

I think the kind of doors most of us are used to look impressive because we've not seen their insides. I have. Both the elevator car's doors and the floor doors are almost always really light weight for their appearance. Not that they are flimsy as such, but that they are not supposed to be vault doors. Depending on the elevator maker, the bottom tracks could be as minimal as "guides" to keep the doors essentially perpendicular to the floor. I've seen this particularly in malls and hotels, where the elevator is part of the decor.
