If anyone out there with old Mac equipment can help, I am in need of a drive that can read 44mb syquest cartridges. I am trying to recover some old files from them.

I have an old powermac with a SCSI port and it can run anything from 7.5.5 to OS9.

I just want to borrow the drive and I'll pay shipping both ways if someone will let me use it for a couple weeks.

Anyone?

I think I have one, and I think it even works! I'll have to go searching through my equipment graveyard in the basement, though, and I won't get the time to to that until the weekend. I'll PM you then if I find it in working order.

Wow! I didn't expect a response this quickly (or at all, really).

I appreciate your help and hope it will work.

Hold your horses, the weekend isn't over yet!

Where in the world are you, by the way?

My horses and I are located in Southfield, Michigan (Detroit area).

The one reasonable auction on eBay for one ended with someone else buying it. There is another, but it likely doesn't work and the owner can't test it.

I'm crossing my fingers.

The good news is that I found the drive. The bad news is that I couldn't get it to mount any of my old SyQuest drives on my old G4 Mac (running OS X), so I don't really know if it still works. The last time I had everything working was over 3 years ago, and who knows what three years of updates to 10.4 has done to the driver for the old Adaptec SCSI card that I have in that G4.

I am going to be out of town for a few days. PM me on Thursday to remind me, and I'll try it again.

Did you ever use it under X? It was probably released in the OS 9 (or 8) days.

I did use it under X, and I remember it was a bear to get working properly back then....

I plan on using it under OS9, but I can go back to 7.5.5 if I have to.

I will await your next message and probably go nuts in between.

What is a parallel dongle? Do you mean it has both a SCSI and a parallel interface?
I only need the SCSI because I don't have a PC.

I mean it has an adapter(dongle) to make the SCSI interface Parallel compatable.

To be honest I have not seen this for a while though I do know where it is in the basement.
I can look for it if you are interested.
I was not into Mac's during the days of SCSI so I am wondering if PC and Mac SCSI were the same?
I imagine they are but have no experience with it.

SCSI is SCSI. It's the disk formatting that is important to the Mac/PC.
My disk is Mac formatted.

I would like to commit to either you or Dork on a drive that works. If I can't confirm, I'll take my chances, I guess.

Let's see what Dork reports tonight or this weekend, OK?

I'm afraid I've had no luck. That G4 that I was using did, in fact, have OS 9.2 installed on it, and I booted back into 1999 to try and get this drive working. when I inserted a cartridge, though, the drive would spin up, then spin back down after a few seconds, and the led's on the front of the drive would blink in what was obviously an error pattern. Couldn't get it to work in OS X, either.

This G4 had an Adaptec PCI SCSI card in it, though, and it's possible I never downloaded OS 9 drivers for it. Now, lurking in my basement, I do have an old 68030 Mac with native SCSI that I can dig out this weekend. It also has Diamonds installed on it, which means that of I set it up this weekend I will spend 15 minutes playing with the SCSI drives and 2 hours pretending its 1993 again. It might even have Shufflepuck Cafe installed on it! W00t!

I am not optimistic. If someone else has a working drive available, you may as well use that one. Whether or not I get mine working, I am glad this thread is leading me to crank up the Pearl Jam and go on a nostalgia trip through the 90's!

Hi - new to all this so bear with me. I have a question related to this thread. I'm trying to get my Syquest 44mb removal drive to work with both an old OS8.5 Powerbook 1400 and my Mac Classic II running System 7.0

Although in system profiler it can 'see' the actual drive it won't recognise any media I insert. The drive definitely works (tested elsewhere) so I guess I need some kind of driver ?

Any advice appreciated.

The media may be no good or the drive no good. If you have any blank media, try writing to it and reading it.

Wasn't there a SCSIProbe control panel that could automagically mount SCSI drives, even in the face of questionable driver support?

As part of OS9 or as an application?

I have little SCSI experience. My first Mac was a Pismo and we never used the wife's SCSI port for anything but a CD-R.

Sorry
I had to go out of town and will be gone until the 13th roughly.
I am certain I have the drive as I moved the box recently with it and the carts but I am not certain if it still works as I have not used it in years.
I have no reason to think it does not though.

I will let you know as soon as I get home and grab it,sorry for the delay.

It might be worth contacting these guys Creartec Computer Services As far as I know they no longer have a physical location, but when they did, they had a warehouse full of old Macs. I don't know what happened to it all but...

There are companies who can do what I want to do, but they also charge an arm and a leg.
Most cannot give a price until after the work is done.

$40 for a working drive (if the price doesn't go up).
I'll see if I can win it.

After I use it, I will just be putting it back up for sale.

I won the auction. I hope to see the drive in the next week. The nice thing about this one is it is tested and should work, unlike some of the other auctions for syquest drives.

Thanks for pointing it out! I would have missed it.

Well, I have good news and bad news:

The good news is I got the drive and was able to mount the disk using SCSI probe (thanks for that tip). I had to download it using my Pismo running Tiger then transfer via Appletalk network. (No access to the 7300 using SL on my 27" iMac.)

The bad news is the disk I mounted was blank. Nothing on it. I will go back to the owner and see if there is a chance he has the files tucked away somewhere.

After confirming he doesn't have the files, I will put the drive on eBay and try to recover as much as possible.

I thank everyone for the assistance.

PS: The 7300/200 running OS9.2.2 with 160MB RAM running Explorer 5.1 was dog-ass slow!
