Has anyone tested the Epson Stylus 740 drivers under OS 9? I'm thinking of doing the upgrade nect week, but I really wouldl like to make sure that I can print. Thanks.

I have a iMac and a 740i. The Epson drivers still work great.

They work fine, but there are some caveats.

Even if you do not do a clean install of of OS 9, do a clean install of the Epson drivers.

Then there are four files you need to remove: Epson USBPrintClass1, Epson USBPrintClass2, Epson USBPrintClass3, and Epson USBPrintClassA.

After doing that, everything should work like a charm.

Hope this helps.

I'm plnning to reformat the drive and reinstall everything. I've only had the Mac for a month, so it's not that big a deal. Do I still need to delete those 4 files?

Yes, the functions of those four files are included in the USB drivers installed by OS 9 Apple recommends that you take them out.

First thing I did after installing os9 was to go to Epson's website and download their latest driver. It's working fine.

Yes, that works, but you can't check the status of your ink cartridges any more. Oh, well.

Some Caveats:

The "older" Epson drivers work fine with OS9. However, the most recent drivers from Espon cause "character clipping" in some programs, primarily Office98, where parts of the characters on the right margin will be clipped off.

This is a confirmed issue with Epson. The tech told me Friday that the new drivers fixing the problem would be available "in about a week." The only work-around until then is a per-document fix: unchecking the "optional character width" option in each document's setup.

I have good news and bad news. The good news is that I have no trouble printing from anything with one bad news exception. Everytime I try to print from Pagemaker 6.52 the system (9) freezes. I have reinstalled Pagemaker, Epson driver, and disabled every extension except those needed to open Pagemaker and the Epson driver. No matter, it continues to freeze. Conflict Catcher cannot find the source of my troubles. Talk about frustration. Neve had any prblem with 8.6. Why did I ever update???

It turns out that the 740 drivers are NOT compatible with OS9's Multiple Users feature. Bummer. I was just about to install 15 of them for our office managers. Now it looks like I'll have to find something else.
