This is my dream even though it is 2-3 years off.

Current size of current 30 gig iPods

Whole front-side is a touch-screen.

80 Gigs

Both Wifi AND Bluetooth

iSight camera built in

Bluetooth headphones

built in mic and small speaker.

On their own that isn't too exciting. But this is how I want to see it working....

I want the touchscreen to not just be used for music as that is a bit of a waste. What I would love to see is not OSX running on an iPod but some specific Mac apps.

I'll skip the obvious part about it playing movies and music.

1) I want iChat to run on it. Using the built in iSight and Wifi I could easily connect to any open network and place video calls. Even better if iChat supported Skype like features it could act as a phone no matter where you were. Either plugging in a USB keyboard or using Bluetooth will allow me to chat.

2) Safari
For obvious reasons

3) Address book and iCal
Again for obvious reasons

4) simple email program

5) Notes (either voice or text). Again using a bluetooth keyboard.

6) RSS reader

7) iTunes that allows you to download music over WiFi directly to the iPod.

I don't think any of this is too far off. The only issue I see with it today is battery-life and cost which I am sure will improve over time.

To me this is something everyone would drool over. I mean what teenager wouldn't want a device that doesn't use expensive cellular airtime and they can sit on their bed and use to talk to friends and listen/download music/movies? I am almost never in an area when in the city that doesn't have WiFi access so I could sit pretty much anywhere and have 3G like conversations but with only wifi. Or at worse just voice calls.

Teenagers aside how much of your time on a big computer is spent just for chat, email and surfing. I would eliminate my computer for most of my daily use!

I don't think this device should have pen input or cellular capabilities as that puts it in the PDA/Phone space.

What do you think?

I totally agree with it being able to eliminate a majority of computer time.

But until battery specs can be improved and they can figure out a way to sell it at a reasonable price, its a pipe dream.

In that time frame I think it will still be about using content created or downloaded on a computer. It will probably expand into more video/films, ebooks, perhaps games, and some versions of the ipod will get a bigger screen to accommodate the new media. But I really don't see it becoming a handheld computer.

An iPod computer will not be useful unless it has a good enough video card to play WOW acceptably.

I think anything else and the press and customers will be to scared of it calling it a PDA, tablet or phone.

This method could act as a Trojan horse.

Not many teenagers would want a PDA (especially girls), if it had those features but call it an iPod they would be all over it.

Steps to realizing this is a stupid idea:

1. Buy oversized sony remote with programmable LCD screen for all your stereo ****
2. Program everything, realizing how programmable it is
3. Realize it's impossible to use WITHOUT LOOKING AT IT since htere is not sense of touch.

You try teaching a 16-year-old Britney Spears fan to use it.

I think it would be great for it to evolve into a Newton like device. I love the Newton by the way, I want one sooo bad.

I think that the next logical step from music and video for the iPod is some sort of web browsing capability and games.

Most "Straight" guys don't go taking their belts off around me as a "prize" but ok

Anywho, for the things I guessed wrong in my first post you can bet than it will do most of those things by the end of the year and naturally will get a iSight and more storage eventually.

Steve owes me a check

Most of what you said will be on a future version of the iPhone. (Not the 80 GB though any time soon.)

Note that iChat will probably get to the iPhone once it gets 3G.

However, I've long since decided I don't really like PDAs, simply because the screen is far too small for real usage.

I'd prefer to see a smaller iPhone and a 12" MacBook personally.

Well, if Apple loses the lawsuit with Cisco over the iPhone name, Apple should call the new phone the Newton Messagepad. Bring the glory days back with a product that is already here and can be made infinitely better over the years.

For the record, I predicted the mini. I even asked "Will we see a mini iPod?' And I suggested that they'd use the micro drives that I'd just read about haha... oh I felt good about that one.
