Okay I'm a complete MAC newb, I just got an iBook G3 500 w/128 megs of ram. It has both OS 9.1 and OS X installed, I tried OS X and it seemed okay until I tried to run a 9.1 app (iTunes) in it...well she basically crashed.

I've heard that 256 megs of RAM is the more realistic 'minimum' for OS X, but I've also heard that it performs poorly on G3's in general..is this a common experience for other G3 owners out there or should I boost up my ram and go for it?

Trust me, boosting your RAM will help A LOT, boost as much as you can. The performance gap between the G3 and G4 are pretty big, but boosting your RAM can make it run pretty well depending on how much you boost it. I believe the iBook can have up to 640MB with the model you have. By the way, are you sure you didn't run the Carbon version of iTunes or was this truly the Classic version?
