After logging out of gmail last night I clicked on another Pinned Tab, suddenly my display turned black and remained so for 4-5 seconds before returning to normal.

It didn't affect iTunes, music kept playing

What may have this been?

A GPU crash, probably. Do you have one those Macs with problematic GPUs that have popped up recently? I think it was the 2011 iMacs with Radeon graphics. If not, could have been caused by temperatures if the cooling isn't working 100%.
The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

I purchased my iMac early 2008 and have had much more than a fair share of issues with it, but has for 18 months been working well.

I think perhaps the issue is more to do with the Chromium browser, in that now when I click to close a tab each window goes completely transparent for 3 seconds before it closes. Maybe the creators of it will post an update soon.
