Hi,

I need to re-install 10.2, but was wondering how the archive feature works, wil it back up my data on the hard rdive, instal a fresh copy of X and keep all my files intact? Does anyone think it might destroy any of my files?

cheers for any help

It installs a brand new OS X system and keeps all your user files and apps etc unchanged. Just like the old "Clean Install" option in the old OS's.

Like littlegreenspud said, Archive and Install installs a clean system folder. However, there's one important difference from OS 9's Clean Install option: Archive and Install will import existing users and settings so that you don't lose any prefs, user or system-wide. It's a pretty cool feature, and something I'm looking forward to doing with 10.3.

I would back up your users and apps to firewire drive, CD or something first, just in case the install goes south part way through. They're not too common, but you read those horror stories from time to time.
