Anyone know how to completely remove the finder from the dock via editing a plist? I've set up pathfinder as my finder, and I'd like to put path finder up there at the #1 dock position instead.

this is both for educational and practical purposes.. so I'd like to do it via the plists if possible.

Transparent dock looks like it actually modified dock.app. I ran a diff on the 2 folders, and it only results in telling me they are different. I added the -a --normal option and it returned unreadable text. I would assume it's not as easy as a plist.

plists aren't text anymore. They went binary with 10.4.

The files in the dock.app package are text.

They can be either. Both formats will work. You can convert between them via a command line tool, as well. I forget what it is, though.
