I have a fairly new 15" aluminum Powerbook that just started developing some quirks with the energy saver preferences. It is my first portable computer. Right now I have the power adapter plugged in, and I have the "automatically reduce the brightness of the display before display sleep" option turned OFF. Yet, it still dims the display before sleep. I have also experienced some quirks in my keyboard backlighting. I was on battery power at the time, with the "turn off when computer is not used for..." setting set to "never." Yet, the backlighting would turn off if I left the Powerbook alone for a few minutes.

EDIT to clarify that it's not all energy saver settings that seem to be ignored. The system sleep settings are fine, for example.

Is there a quick fix to this? Like resetting something?

I have exactly the same problem. I'm on a 667 DVI powerbook. The only difference is that my system has problems sleeping as well...
I think it's a Tiger issue. At least the 10.4.1 version. Try to update to the latest and see what happens.
I would do the same if I wasn't stuck on this 56k connection...

I've been running 10.4.2 since it was released.

2 things:
the screen dimming IS a tiger issue...hopefully a fix in 10.4.3...?

i had a big drama last year with apple: my energy saver settings would not stick at "highest".
discovered it was because i was using custom symbols (+ for pm, - for am) in the menubar clock;
going back to AM & PM fixed this...

but only after apple had me zero my hard drive & reinstall everything...

Same with my 15" PB running 10.4.2. Let us know if you find a cure. Thanks.

The screen-dimming is a feature in Tiger, not a bug.

As for the sleep issue, are you attached to any devices? Some reports of bugs there (that 10.4.3 should tackle). I've not had any problems, with my PB, by the way.

Have you zapped pram?

yeah, zapped PRAM, seems to occur independently of devices connected or not. very strange

Well, there's a check box to turn it off in the Energy Saver preferences, which I have done. And the screen still dims.

I just found this thread in the iMac forum -- http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.php?t=259718

A new member Crawdad has a solution to the dimming issue. Right now it's the last post in the thread.

Count me as another who's Tibook won't sleep on battery power. This is such a basic thing in a laptop, it's been happening for a couple of years, despite complete system reinstalls. It's the only thing I really dislike about an otherwise near perfect piece of technology

Apple level1 tech support is known for that.
"Reset PMU, Archive & Install or Zero out HD & Reinstall"
Those are the most commons solutions they could come up with when you call them. Makes me wonder if I should get Apple care or not.

Sometimes the best place to get an answer is still in this forum.
