At worst, ship them to other states. Lots of time and money to train a sniffer dog.

I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

"Lolade had seen this happen before, so she instinctively knew what to do. She downloaded Facebook onto her phone.
"I installed it to record what I knew was going to happen," she said. "I always said to myself if I had a police encounter I'd record it on Facebook Live."

This is instinctive? So she apparently never had a FB account before and instinctively downloaded FB, created an account, and learned how to use FB Live all before the police came? Yeah, right!!

I eat lettuce, but I always cook my lettuce, a weird concept for most people in the Western world. Simply plop freshly washed lettuce in a pot of boiling water with oil inside for 4 seconds and remove. Add condiments and enjoy.

I assume she had a FB account already, and just downloaded their app for live streaming. Unless I missed it, the story doesn't say she was new to FaceBook.

I guess so, but when the news said she downloaded FB, it seems to me that she was new and she created an account right there and then. I never knew that their app for live streaming was a separate app. I don't use FB.

There was a separate app, Facebook Mentions, but was for celebrities/politicians. Facebook live is the left icon on the top of the newsfeed.

And when quality gets low or someone nuts up and quits, they're easily replaced by the next person desperate for a job. Unless Bezos personally writes everyone a check each month, I don't think he can demand that Amazon pay higher wages than are necessary to maintain the workforce that they need.
Costco seems to et away with it.

They could also move away from using temps and actually hire people.

I don't disagree with that being the reality, but the part that was being underscore is the complete lack of imagination (and self-absorbtion) for the man who created online shopping as it is today.

Everyone will be seeing a lot of privacy policy updates. From all the larger services. New European privacy laws are about to kick in, causing all the revisions.

I wondered about that. In the past few weeks I've gotten updates from Google, Kickstarter, Under Armor (??), eBay, Etsy, GoG, Airbnb, Zillow, and more maybe?

Every single service that does business in Europe has to update and/or inform about their systems' compliance with privacy regulations.

That damn law was passed more than two years ago, and I’m fairly sure that there was no stipulation that all the work to implement it had to happen the last few weeks.
The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

The extra privacy protections may decrease revenue. With free services, the customer is also the product. The true customer being advertising metrics.

Financial motivation to delay implementation.

The main effect will be that it creates a greater barrier of entry for new companies to enter the market. Established big companies have both the resources to implement this, and have the “trust” (often undeservedly so) of existing users.

Long story short: this will only marginally improve privacy, but vastly reduce new competition.

That’s how regulations work most of them times.

Indeed. So I have a smallish email list that I use for marketing. Now I have to email my list before the 25th asking them to opt IN. If anyone doesn't reply I have to opt them out. Since no one really cares about replying to this sort of request I expect to loose around 90% of my mailing list this way.

Hey ho.

You could offer a small service credit incentive to anyone who replies. A free defrag on next service, or MacKeeper removal.

I’d postulate that 10 customers who’ve opted in to receive your updates are worth a lot more than 90 who auto-filter your mails to the spam folder.

the nytimes has a slider. I hear laurel on every step except the very right, where I hear Larry. Never Yanny. What is up with my hearing?

Very interesting!

Right at the yanny end I hear “Gary”, but it’s like a little kid who can’t form Rs yet... “Geah-wee”.

Here’s the interesting bit. Once I hear it that way, I can take the slider back towards laurel and it doesn’t switch to laurel until about a third of the way through.

Sorta like an optical illusion that once it clicks the other way, you can’t unsee it for a bit.

For me, this is repeatable.

Playing with the NYT slider, I can definitely hear when it's becomes "laurel", but it never quite sounds like "Yanny" on the other end. On that end, for me, it always sounds like Yaley. Yale - E.

I asked a friend who hears yanny with the original, and the pronunciation she gave was “yawn-ee”.

The discussion happened a long time ago. Avatars + Signatures made for too much noise around the text. After public discussion, we decided to allow only one. Most people chose signatures, so avatars lost out.

This was maybe 10 years ago. I haven't noticed the subject come up since.

The Lincoln forum is the worst.

Even if you specifically don't fill out that info, it still takes up space for every post.

I'm finding more and more car forums that seem to be little more than parked domains. Someone will buy "Chevy-Malibu.com" and set up a forum, fill it with ads, charge vendors to maintain accounts, and let it sit there, with little concern for actual forum content.
