Unfortunately, I think MCE is about the only place you can buy one. While Panasonic has released their UJ-835 DVD burner, I haven't found any places selling them except MCE. And MCE tends to overcharge by a LOT. If you're willing to wait a couple weeks for it to trickle into the larger resellers, you can probably save pretty close to $100. $300 is a very high price for the drive considering the 4x version (which doesn't do dual-layer) costs $150.
